Stanford's ultrasonic camera An ultrasonic camera system for viewing internal body organs is currently being developed and evaluated at

Stanford Research Institute in the USA, under a three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health. Unlike ultrasonic visualization systems now in diagnostic use, this one will produce focused tv images of soft tissue structures within certain organs of the body. Such imaging is expected to be complementary to x-ray diagnosis because of the strong interaction between ultrasound and soft tissue: clearly, organs not 'visible' in x-radiation may well be visible if illuminated by an ultrasonic beam. Anticipated applications of the ultrasonic camera, with ils characteristic sensitivity and resolution, are in mass screening and multiphasic testing. Strengthening steel A new achievement has been noted in the steel industry of the USSR, the production of a special high-tensile steel. Conventional steel, treated with high-power ultrasound at a continuous-pouring works in Tula (South of Moscow), has been known for some time to have a strength almost double that of the untreated metal. The ultrasonic vibrations are claimed to improve the structure of the metal and increase serviceable output. The latest steel development is the production of a high boron content steel by treating the smelted metal at 3,000°C with a high-power ultrasonic beam. ANNOUNCEMENTS Research facility The Electronic Materials Unit of the Royal Radar Establishment exists to make research quantities of electronic materials developed by their Materials Research Division. Many of these can be made available on special order. The materials involved include those of interest to workers in acoustoelectronics, and are mostly inorganic single crystals not commercially available due to their novelty or the difficulty of their preparation. BAS meets Spring The Spring Meeting of the British Acoustical Society will be held at Loughborough University of Technology in April this year. Two parallel technical sessions are being organised, on 'Aerodynamic noise sources in industry' and 'Ultrasonics in industry'. The former session will range over all aspects

of the generation, measurement and control of noise arising from the movement of a compressible fluid, including valves, gas turbines and combustion. The session on ultrasonics in industry will probably be arranged in three sections: non-destructive testing, high power applications and miscellaneous measurements. Delegates to both technical sessions will meet during the event to hear invited lectures and attend the presentation of the Society's Rayleigh and Silver medals.
