F O C U S BASF 2007: performance products: coatings For its fiscal 2007 (period ends 31 Dec 2007), the Coatings segment of the Performance Products division of the BASF group has reported sales to third parties of €2587 M (€2414 M for its fiscal 2006), of which (location of customer): Europe accounted for 49%, North America 19%, Asia Pacific 13%, and South America, Africa & the Middle East 19%. The decline in sales in North America is attributable to negative currency effects and a difficult market environment in the American private housing construction and automotive industries. In particular, the growth in automotive coatings in China and Europe, and in architectural coatings in South America contributed to the increase in sales. The company expanded its system supplier business, which enables

customers to reduce the overall costs of coating processes. In addition to supplying products, the company also provides inventory management and other additional services for its customers. In automotive refinish coatings, the company posted slightly lower sales than in 2006. Negative currency effects could not be fully offset by strong demand in commercial transport coatings in Europe, or by the expansion of the brands Glasurit and Salcomix. Sales in industrial coatings surpassed those of the previous year. In Europe, both organic business growth and the activities added as part of the acquisition of the construction chemicals business in 2006 contributed to the growth in sales. This more than compensated for weaker business in North America and Japan. Business in architectural coatings in South America developed favourably. In

C OAT I N G S Europe, the activities in architectural coatings acquired with the Construction Chemicals business contributed to the increase in sales. Income from operations was below the previous year’s level. This was primarily due to the appreciation of the euro, higher raw material costs and special charges as a result of an impairment loss on property, plant and equipment and intangible assets in the industrial coatings business in North America. The company plans to further increase sales in 2008 and expects earnings above the previous year’s level. The company is expanding its presence in the growth markets of Eastern Europe and Asia, particularly in Russia, China and India.
