regarded product lines’ will strengthen the company’s global presence, he says. ‘The delivery, quality and specifications of the acquired products will not change’, confirms Jim Savastano, HallStar VP of sales and marketing. ‘The acquisition strengthens both our long-standing presence in Europe and our ester product portfolio for polymer additives’, he comments. The acquired products will be integrated into HallStar’s existing infrastructure for sales, customer service and manufacturing. The company says it has a strong customer interface in place to handle orders of the former Dow Hyperlast products. Both HallStar and Dow Hyperlast plan to work together to maintain product quality and seamless service throughout the transition. Current customers are being contacted to discuss the details of order transition. They will be supported and assisted throughout to ensure there are no disruptions in meeting their supply needs, the companies say. ‘The product line divestiture is a positive step for our customers and for Dow’, explains Gordon Alderley, systems house director for Dow Hyperlast. ‘HallStar has years of experience in the development and manufacture of polymeric esters so they can serve customers effectively, and it permits us to focus on our core business of polyurethane systems and elastomers.’ Contact: The HallStar Company, Chicago, IL, USA. MATERIALS BASF debuts ‘whitest of whites’ effect pigment
B
ASF SE has introduced Glacier™ Frost White, claimed to be the whitest pearl effect pigment currently available on the market. A new generation of titanium dioxide-coated synthetic mica flakes makes it possible to achieve ‘extraordinary lustre and brilliance’ combined with the ‘whitest of whites’ for attractive applications in plastics, coatings and printing inks, the company says.

The shimmering gloss of pearl-based pigments is popular for luxury items. However, conventional pearl pigments based on natural mica flakes coated with titanium dioxide typically show a yellowish tint due to impurities such as iron oxides in the substrate. In contrast, the synthetic mica substrate used in the new Glacier Frost White pigment is completely transparent and free of coloured impurities, and therefore offers better lustre and brightness than conventional pigments and outstanding sparkle effects in all shade areas, BASF says. Glacier Frost White allows the formulation of neutral to slightly bluish white pearl shades. Optimized tricoat formulations allow for whiter whites at all observation angles, the company adds. In addition to a whiter appearance, the new pearl pigment provides reflections of pure white brilliance. In combination with carbon black, neutral greys and noble blacks with a slightly bluish appearance are possible, says BASF. Glacier Frost White is available in a chrome-free surface-treated version for exterior applications and in a non-treated version for general applications. The new ‘whiter white’ pigment expands BASF’s pigment portfolio by ‘meeting a critical need in the clean white and vibrant colour space’, the company says. It was officially introduced at the European Coatings Show in Nuremberg, Germany, on 31 March 2009 and is now commercially available in both Europe and North America.
