FOCUS Jotun increases sales in Jan-Apr 2017 in a demanding market Jotun's results for Jan-Apr 2017 are characterized by good growth in the Decorative Paints segment but difficult conditions in the shipbuilding and offshore markets. An increase in raw material prices and the negative effects of currency exchange rates also contribute to a weaker result compared to last year. Jotun's operating revenues reached NKR 5.34 bn in Jan-Apr 2017, down by 2.6% from the same period last year (Jan-Apr 2016: NKR 5.48 bn). Operating profit for the period was NKR 670 M, compared with NKR 935 M in Jan-Apr 2016. Increased sales of decorative paints could not compensate for the decline in the marine and offshore sectors. In addition, a weakened Norwegian krone, compared to the same period last year, impacted negatively upon the company's operating revenues. With a decline in newbuild activity, the market is shifting towards maintenance, and Jotun increased sales to maintenance of ships. In May 2017, Jotun launched the world's first NORSOK-compliant offshore maintenance system. The system is the first brush and roller application paint system that satisfies the NORSOK standard. Total purchases of property, plant and equipment, and intangible assets amounted to NKR 336 M in Jan-Apr 2017 (Jan-Apr 2016: NKR 323 M). Investments account for 6% of the firm's operating revenues, and are in line with Jotun's strategic ambitions. Construction of new production facilities in the Philippines, Myanmar and Malaysia, together with the new headquarters and research centre in Norway, make up the bulk of these investments.

Powder Coatings Line Gets Premium Pigments Axalta Coating Systems (Philadelphia) has added two new colors to its Alesta AR400 palette, a line of architectural-grade powder coatings. Both the Axalta Silver and Bone White Pearl pigments produce a smooth, metallic coverage that's as abrasion and corrosion resistant as the rest of the AR400 line. According to the company, those architectural coatings contain "virtually no volatile organic compounds'' or hazardous air pollutants, making them sustainable and environmentally conscious. As with the entire AR400 line, the company notes, the Axalta Silver and Bone White Pearl meet or exceed the American Architectural Manufacturers Association AAMA 2604 standard for high performance organic coatings on aluminum extrusions and panels.

Parliamentary Committee Could Slow Down Chemicals Management in Canada The Canadian Paint and Coatings Association (CPCA) is reporting that the Standing Committee on the Environment and Sustainable Development tabled a report in Canada's House of Commons to amend the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA, 1999). If accepted by the government, the report's recommendations would mean a complete overhaul of the Chemicals Management Plan (CMP) in Canada even though the CMP has been widely applauded by governments around the world. In fact, several countries have adopted or will be adopting a similar approach to chemical assessment including the United States, Brazil and Australia. Canada's approach to chemicals management over the past 10 years is an evidenced-based assessment of chemicals in commerce using the latest scientific data to determine a chemical's potential risk to human health and the environment. Once such a determination is made, risk management measures are taken, such as regulations, to control that risk.
