Glasforms builds second high-tech pultrusion facility GRP manufacturer Glasforms Inc is building its second state-of-the-art pultrusion facility in Birmingham, Alabama, USA Ground breaking began last October on the first phase of a major expansion project totalling over $9 million when complete. The first phase includes a 2800 m* plant complete with climate control and proprietary high-output machinery. The automated facility is scheduled to begin operations this month. Birmingham was selected as Glasforms’ second location because of its proximity to major

customers, says president Peter Pfaff. According to the Society of Plastics Industry, pultrusion applications will grow 10% annually over the next four years. With the successful development of a series of new products, Glasforms expects to double its business over the same four years. company will The continue to operate its 9300 m* facility at its headquarters in San Jose, California. BASF to double styrene capacity at Antwerp BASF is to increase styrene capacity at its Antwerp site from 260 000 to 500 000 tonnes/year with the addition of a third reactor. This significant increase in productivity will be achieved with an investment of just DM75 million thanks to forward planning. BASF originally designed the plant with three reactors to ensure flexibility in meeting increased demand for styrene. Two were built and commissioned in 1992, and the third reactor is expected to come on stream by the beginning of 1997. Production at Antwerp will then run at full capacity. With this new investment, BASF’stotal annual capacity for styrene is brought to just under 1.4 million tonnes. The company also manufac-

tures styrene at Ludwigshafen (510 000 tonnes), and at Rheinische Olefinwerke in Wesseling (350 000 tonnes), Germany. The additional output is required for the production of polystyrene, dispersions, Styropol and unsaturated polyester resins. Some of the styrene will be used by BASFCorp in the USA In connection with this, BASFhas signed a reciprocal supply agreement with US company Huntsman Chemical, based in Salt Lake City. BASF will supply styrene from Antwerp to Huntsman Chemical in Europe. In return, Huntsman Chemical in the USA will supply the same amount of styrene to BASFCorp.
