Rohm and Haas to expand worldwide: “Determined to retain leadership”

Bayer regroups additives in chemicals restructure A new division, Performance Chemicals, grouping together polymer additives and chemicals for textiles, leather and paper, with sales of about DM2.5 billion, is to be set up by Bayer AG, in a re-structuring of its chemicals businesses. The existing four divisions will be reduced to three, by merging the inorganic chemicals activities with other groups, involving activities with sales totalling DM 7.6 billion, out of a group total of DM 55 billion. Within the existing polymers division, Bayer is also bringing together its interests in raw materials for coatings with adhesive materials, colourants and inorganic and organic pigments, representing combined sales of around DM3 billion.

Rohm and Haas, claimed world leader in impact modifiers and processing aids for plasa substantial 55 000 tics, is making tonnes/year expansion in its worldwide capacity. Charles M Tatum, Vice President and worldwide Business Director declared: “We are determined to retain our leading global position... and are able to increase capacity in less time than our competitors”.

Bayer has already moved its activities in titanium dioxide and silicones into joint ventures with, respectively, Kerr-McGee and General Electric.

Demand for both acrylic and MBS (methyl methacrylate butadiene styrene) modifiers continues strong, both from the construction and packaging industries.

A new business group, combining basic and fine chemicals from the present inorganic and organic chemicals units, will also be formed, with sales of some DM2.1 billion.

Acrylic polymer technology forms the base of 70% of Rohm and Haas’ total $4 billion business, giving the company the critical mass to offer the necessary capacity, commented Tatum, adding that there had already been heavy investment in quality systems and the reliability of the processes employed gave the company a strong competitive advantage.

Degussa increases Spanish silica holding to 100% Degussa has increased its 50% holding to 100% control of the Spanish producer of precipitated silica and zeolite, Silquimica SA. The company produces about 30 000 tonnes of precipitated silica and 40 000 tonnes of zeolite a year for applications, respectively, in reinforcement of rubber for car tyres and shoe soling, and as builders in washing powder. The move underlines the importance to Degussa of the silica business.
