F O C US BCC sees global spending on paints reaching $156 bn by 2020 BCC Research (of Wellesley, MA) – formerly Business Communications Co (headquartered in Norwalk, CT) – publishes about 250 market research reports per year covering a wide range of topics. We have already reviewed BCC’s recent studies on the world markets for microspheres and flame retardants ( See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Oct 2013, 2-3). Since then, BCC has published three more studies that may be of interest to pigment suppliers – two relating to the plastics industry and one relating to the paints industry. In its 304-page study on the global paint industry published in July 2014, BCC forecasts that world consumption of all types of paint will reach $127 bn in 2015 and will then grow at 4.1% per annum to reach $155.6 bn by 2020. In the architectural paints segment, signs of an improved market for real estate and the accelerated pace of construction of residential buildings in North America and Europe are seen as significant, enabling these major regions to bounce back after several years of declining demand. Meanwhile, the ongoing growth in manufacturing activity, especially in China, India and other emerging markets will continue to spur increases in the consumption of paint for vehicles, consumer durables and industrial maintenance applications. Powder coatings represent the fastest growing category of paint. Between 2015 and 2020, sales revenues from powder coatings are expected to rise by 7.2% per annum from just over $30 bn in 2015 to $42.8 bn in 2020. Sales revenues from waterborne paints are expected to rise by 5.3% per annum from just under $35 bn in 2015 to $45.2 bn by 2020. The rest of global paint consumption, worth about $88 bn by 2020, will be dominated by conventional solvent-borne paints, though demand for high-solids coatings and radiation-curable coatings will show strong growth. BCC’s report consists of nine chapters. Following the introduction, executive summary and overview, Chapter 4 shows an analysis of the global market by technology. Technical aspects of the different technologies are discussed in Chapter

6. Chapter 5 shows an analysis of the global market by end-use segment, including: vehicle refinishes, marine paints, road-markings, coil coatings, paints for plastics and wood, aerosols, coatings for vehicles, domestic appliances, metal containers and closures, industrial and agricultural machinery and equipment, non-wood furniture, paper and board, film and foil, electrical insulations and various other applications. Chapter 7 is devoted to discussing highlights in the industry’s history, mergers and acquisitions, key industry drivers and major corporate revenue streams. Chapter 8 provides brief corporate profiles of just over 100 paint companies, including not only the well-known industry leaders (AkzoNobel, Asian Paints, BASF, Kansai Paint, Masco, Nippon Paint, PPG, RPM International, SherwinWilliams and Valspar) but also some of the lesser-known paint companies (such as Boero, Boysen, Burke Industrial, California Products, Cloverdale, Empils, Hentzen, Red Spot, Sheboygan, Vista, Yasar, Yenkin Majestic and YungChi Paint & Varnish). Chapter 9 is essentially an appendix, with lists of significant US patents in the field of paints and coatings, lists of paint and powder coating manufacturers plus a glossary of terms used in the industry. Global market for plastic additives worth more than $43 bn now & will top $60 bn by 2020, according to BCC BCC’s latest study on the world market for additives used in the plastics industry was published in March 2014. Colorants and fillers/extenders are counted as “additives” in the context of this study. So too are: flame retardants, plasticisers, heat stabilisers, light stabilisers, impact modifiers, antioxidants, lubricants, blowing agents, biocides, anti-static agents and sundry other speciality additives.

Total global expenditure on plastic additives was $43.4 bn in 2013 and this is expected to increase to $47.7 bn in 2015. For the five years after that, average growth is forecast at 4.8%, so that by 2020 the total world market should be worth nearly $60.3 bn. The lay-out of this report is analogous to the lay-out of BCC’s global paint market report. Following the introduction, executive summary and overview, Chapter 4 shows an analysis of the global market for each type of additive (colorants, flame retardants, etc). Technical aspects relating to the manufacture and processing of different types of polymer, highlighting the role of additives, are discussed in Chapter 6. Analyses of the global markets by end-use segment are discussed in Chapter 5, the most important segments being: automotive, other transport equipment, packaging, building, domestic appliances, electrical/electronic and medical. Chapter 7 covers the structure of the industry and competitive analysis. Chapter 8 provides brief corporate profiles of 64 suppliers of plastics additives, including companies in the colorants and fillers field such as: Ampacet, Cabot, Chemtura, Clariant, Color-Chem, Cristal/Millennium, Croda, DuPont, Evonik, Ferro, Hanna, Holliday, Huber, Huron, Ishihara, Plastics Color Corp, PolyOne, Prabhu PolyColor, Specialty Minerals Inc, Sun Chemical and Teknor. The final three chapters are essentially appendices, with lists of significant US patents in the relevant field, lists of additive suppliers and lists of relevant Government regulations.
