FIG. 2. Determination of dominance hierarchies for hinds in Experiments 1 (1992; a) and 2 (1993; b). The animals were kept as a group and had established a dominance hierarchy, which was determined by noting dyadic agonistic interactions immediately before inducing estrus. The numbers in the grid indicate numbers of interactions won by the hinds identified on the vertical axes. Numbers above the diagonal are those won by the presumed dominant hind of the pair, and those below by the presumed subordinate. The same hinds were studied in both years. The hierarchy given for Experiment 1 does not include data for the yearlings with which the adult hinds were housed (these animals were absent in Experiment 2).
