BEHAVIORAL TREATMENT OF STUTTERING WITH YOUNG CHILDREN: PROCEDURES AND RESULTS J. COSTELLO INGHAM Santa Barbara, CA, USA
G. RILEY Fullerton, CA, USA
Findings of a 3-year study of direct behavioral treatment (Extended Length of Utterance) with children who stutter, ages 3~5 years, will be reported. Evidence regarding treatment efficacy will be presented through objective data (% syllables stuttered, speaking rate, and speech naturalness) collected from Standard Talking Samples (500-syllables of spontaneous conversation with five talking partners, within and beyond the clinic setting), obtained periodically throughout pretreatment, treatment, and posttreament periods. The status of other subject characteristics, such as language, phonology, and speechmotor performance, will also be reported. ELU treatment will be described and demonstrated in some detail, including videotape illustrations.
