PATENTS the seal against the rotor is fed from the bearing. Patent number: WO 02/23038 Publication date: 21 March 2002

Forming or repairing a well-bore casing Applicant: Shell Oil Co, USA An apparatus and method for forming or repairing a well-bore casing, a pipeline, or a structural support is disclosed. An expandable tubular member is radially expanded and plastically deformed by an expansion cone that is displaced by hydraulic pressure. Before or after the radial expansion of the tubular member, a sliding sleeve valve within the apparatus permits a fluidic sealing material (which can be hardened) to be injected into an annulus between the expandable tubular member and a pre-existing structure. Patent number: WO 02/23007 Inventors: D.P. Brisco, David, E.A. Zwald, C. Daigle, G.M. Noel, W.J. Dean, A.G. Filippov, R.D. Nida, R.L. Cook, L. Ring, K.K. Wadell, W.R. Stephenson, R.T. Gusevik Publication date: 21 March 2002

Sealed magnet trap arrangement Applicant: Mann & Hummel Advanced Filtration Concepts Inc, USA This patent provides details of a sealed system that collects liquid coolant from a series of machine tools. It includes magnets for arresting and holding magnetic objects, such as broken bits from milling machines or inadvertently dropped hand tools, entrained in the liquid coolant before they can damage liquid coolant recirculation pumps. Adjustable supports are employed for changing the height of a coolant liquid collecting trough. A system of seals connect the collecting trough to support rails for the machine tools. Patent number: WO 02/22273 Inventors: R.L. Duncum, T.M. Netsch, A.L. O’Bryant, B.W. Pahl, M.A. Schroder Publication date: 21 March 2002

Belt filter seal Applicant: Filterwerk Mann & Hummel GmbH, Germany A method and apparatus for sealing the opposed side edges of a fluid-treating belt filter have been developed. It employs an inflatable elastic tube. Opposed sealing surfaces are spaced apart from each other defining a gap. These can be brought into sealing relationship by activating the tube. The tube is tested prior to and during sealing. Fluid that bypasses the seal are collected for recycling. Patent number: WO 02/22231 Inventors: B. Pahl, F.M. Croket, R.L. Duncum Publication date: 21 March 2002

Sealing Technology September 2002

Floating brush seal Applicant: Turbocare Inc, USA Details are given of a floating brush seal for a gas turbine or steam turbine, or a compressor, which typically includes labyrinth seals. A separate holder is provided, or a groove or recess is provided in a labyrinth seal, and the brush seal is allowed to float in this recess because it is supported on a spring and is not affixed to the holder or the labyrinth seal. The spring or other resilient member urges the brush seal towards the shaft or rotor, so that the seal effectively floats (because the spring supports only the weight of the brush seal). Use of a floating brush seal allows bristles with a desired stiffness to be used, and avoids interference transients that would degrade the bristles and decrease the useful service life of the brush seal. Patent number: WO 02/23069 Inventors: W.J. Catlow, E. Sulda Publication date: 21 March 2002

Reducing degradation of elastomer seals Applicant: The Lubrizol Corp, USA A composition suitable for reducing sludge and degradation of elastomer seals in engines is the subject of this patent. It comprises an oil of lubrication viscosity and a minor amount of a sludge preventing/seal protecting (nitrogen containing) dispersant. The latter is a reaction product of a hydrocarbyl-substituted succinic acylating agent having a limited amount of low molecular weight substituent, and a polyamine or condensed polyamine containing less than 20 mole percent of polyamine components of six or fewer nitrogen atoms. Patent number: WO 02/22767 Inventors: C.F. Stachew, G.D. Lamb, W.D. Abraham, M. Galic Raguz Publication date: 21 March 2002

Cable bushing for a vehicle door Applicant: Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, Germany The invention relates to cable bushing on the front surface of a vehicle door (made up of at least one outer door panel and one inner door panel). Arranged on the inner door panel, on the front surface when seen from the interior of the vehicle, is a cavity which is used as a bushing area for the cable and also as an arranging area for a seal. The aim of the invention is to produce a cable bushing which can be assembled using minimal effort and in a procedurally reliable manner. The seal is held in place on the inner door panel and is arranged in a radial direction on the cable and the cavity. When the vehicle door is closed, the seal is arranged adjacent to the door seal and seals the dry area on the inside of the vehicle from a moist area around the vehicle door. Patent number: WO 02/22402

Slidable gasket Applicant: Terumo Kabushiki Kaisha, Japan and Kokoku Intech Co Ltd, Japan A gasket is described that possesses excellent sliding characteristics and properties, without the addition of lubricant and which holds sealability. It is installed in slidable fashion in the outer tube of a syringe, wherein at least the outer periphery of a gasket body is covered with a resin film formed from a material that has a lower coefficient of friction than the material of the gasket body, and where the surface roughness of the resin film on the outer tube side is (Ra1). The surface roughness of the resin film on the gasket body side is (Ra2). In accordance with the patent, it is required that the relation of 1.5Ra1 = Ra2 is satisfied, which means that the resin film is prevented from being peeled off the gasket body and formed defects, such as pin holes, can be prevented from occurring. Patent number: WO 02/22192 Inventor: K. Tachikawa, H. Yunoki, Y. Kikuchi Publication date: 21 March 2002

Bell seal inspection apparatus Applicant: Siemens Westinghouse Power Corp, USA An inspection apparatus for in-situ leak testing of the bell seal of a steam turbine is detailed. The apparatus includes a pair of inflatable bladders for defining a sealed volume having the bell seal as its only leakage path. The mass flow rate of pressurized air at various pressures through the bell seal is compared to the known flow rates through a similarly designed bell seal having various degrees of degradation. A camera rotated by a motor (between the bladders) provides an indication of the proper positioning of the inspection apparatus and facilitates a visual inspection of the bell seal and retaining nut. The inspection apparatus may be inserted into an inlet to the turbine through a disassembled flow control valve without the need for any disassembly of the turbine. Patent number: WO 02/25064 Inventors: G.F. Dailey, M. Fischer, M.J. Metala, J.A. Bauer Publication date: 28 March 2002

Edge seal for fuel cell stack assembly Applicant: International Fuel Cells Llc, USA A substrate assembly or stack of fuel cells are bonded or sealed together with a thermoplastic film, or formed elastomer seal. Each of the individual cell components are bonded to one
