Better self-cleaning filters A range of highly efficient, self-cleaning filters has been introduced by Firtop Filters. These are offered as an alternative to dual-in-line strainers, and a l l o w cleaning of t h e filter e l e m e n t without interruption to the process flow. Cleaning is carried out within the filter, with no need to remove the element, so reducing maintenance. The design of the Firtop filters eliminates the problems of backwashing, and promotes continuous online o p e r a t i o n with m i n i m u m liquid wastage. The filter element utflises a fiat, nonc l o g g i n g o u t e r edge, on which c o n t a m i n a n t s build up; these are removed by a simple cleaning action w h i c h c a n be i n i t i a t e d manually or automatically. The element rotates a g a i n s t a fixed, s p r i n g -
loaded, wear-compensating wiper blade assembly with a removable trrFE blade, minimising friction and eliminating build-up of static electricity (vital when filtering highly inflammable fluids). Any contaminant on the outer edge of the element is scraped off and falls to the sump. Contaminants are removed by opening a d r a i n / d u m p valve. On automatic models the cleaning cycle is initiated by a switch, which monitors the pressure differential across the inlet and outlet of the filter until a preset cleaning pressure has been reached. The dump value then operates automatically on a preset, adjustable time-switch. Barton Hydraulic Engineering Co Ltd, Stoke Heath Works, Hanbury Road, Bromsgrove, Worcs. Glass microfibre filters Probably the most common measure of water quality in use today is the determination of s u s p e n d e d solids content and related techniques. The procedure is carr i e d o u t e x t e n s i v e l y in laboratories monitoring the quality of water supplies. Since relatively large sample volumes are necessary to provide the required weight of residual solid, the performance of the filter is 2O4
critical. Whatman glass microfibre filters provide the b e n e f i t s of fine p a r t i c l e retention, with very high flow rates, enabling fast, efficient f i l t r a t i o n of t h e specified s a m p l e v o l u m es to be carried out. Whatman glass microfibre filters are manufactured f r o m 100% b o r o s i l i c a t e glass, without chemical binders, making them chemically, physically and
Pollution & Process Monitoring Ltd has been awarded exclusive UK distribution rights for t h e US Anatel range of u l t r a p u r e w a t e r analysis systems, including the Anatel A-100 SE, designed to provide continuous online m o n i t o r i n g of ultrapure water facilities. Offering a detection limit of 50 TOC parts per trillion (0.05 ppb), with a resolution of 10 parts per trillion below 20 ppb, the Anatel A100 SE is claimed to be the most sensitive system of its type in the world, and a much faster and convenient alternative to offiine (grab sample) laboratory tests. Sample analysis is performed within minutes, and is automatically repeated at user-selectable intervals. The t e s t r e s u l t s ar e reported immediately and disp l a y e d on t h e s y s t e m ' s
i n d e p e n d e n t d i s pl a y a nd control unit, which can be panel-mounted remotely in a control room, or wherever desired, away from the compact sensor and power supply units. In addition to displaying clearly the latest ppb reading, the front panel display includes a number of other useful visible indicators. Illuminated bars show in 25% increments the TOC level expressed as a percentage of the user-defined alarm limit, and an alarm illumin at es when this limit is e x c e e d e d . LEDs i n d i c a t e whether TOC levels are rising or falling over the duration of a preselected period. Meter monitors particles to 0.03/ m Bearwell International Systems has announced a new in-pipe sanitary process turbidity meter from McNab. The m o d e l H S A 2 / H S B precisely measures particles as small as 0.03 #m ( 3 0 n m ) . Conventional absorption and forward-scatter turbidity designs exhibit severe loss in sensitivity on particles smaller than 1/lm. Applications include measurement of wax dispersions, cobalt, titanium oxide pigment, cola syrup, vitamin oil, emulsion, and artificial blood. Because of its heightened sensitivity to small particles, the HSA2/HSB t u r b i d i t y m e t e r can see
bacteria and yeast. Another a p p l i c a t i o n is in s t e r i l e filtration of parenteral and diagnostic solutions. It also helps verify analysis of the backwater wash for optim u m filter efficiency. This advanced electronic analyser can be used to check the quality of water, and will interface fully with sophisticated process control systems. The HSB version includes self-checking diagnostics.
biologically inert. They can be used over a wide temp e r a t u r e range, from low t e m p e r a t u r e s without emb r i t t l e m e n t up to 500°C, and they are amenable to use in gravimetric analysis where ignition is involved. They will not discolour or deteriorate under normal storage conditions. Grade GF/C is available in a range of circles and
s h e e t sizes, or as f i l t e r slides. The latter consist of a 7 cm filter mounted in a rigid plastic holder, and they ar e i n t e n d e d for use in automated laboratory filtration instrumentation.
