This first list covers a period commencing I January 1971. After the publication of the second list in the next issue, the lag will have been reduced to a m i n i m u m and subsequent lists will cover the current literature. A similar bibliography of the literature covering the period prior to 1 January 1971 will be published separately at a later date. G.N.C. and D.N.W.

THIS bibliography of papers, which are relevant to the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic agent in medicine and biology, has been compiled from various sources. Papers concerned with the therapeutic use of ultrasonic energy due to its heating or mechanical effects have not been included, nor have papers where ultrasonic energy has been .used in chemical procedures because of its mechanical action, such as in cleaning, mixirlg or emulsifying. Papers concerned with the effects of ultrasound on tissue or of tissues upon ultrasonic energy have been included and so have papers describing instrumentation or techniques primarily concerned with the use of ultrasound for diagnostic procedures. Both animal and h u m a n studies have been included. The classification adopted by the authors is subscribed. It is difficult to adhere to a rigid classification in a subject with such a widespread and expanding application in the fields of biology and medicine and the authors invite suggestions and criticisms concerning the material that should and should not be included. If the decision about subjects to be included is difficult, it is even more difficult to select which relevant papers shall be included. The authors have taken the arbitrary decision only to include papers published in toto or in abstract in journals, proceedings or books which are available to subscribing libraries. Thus, papers presented at meetings have not been included even when published in the programme or proceedings of the meeting, if the programme or proceedings were available only to members of the sponsoring society or registrants at the meeting. The authors would welcome comments on these matters as well as the receipt of material that might be included in subsequent editions ofthi~ bibliography to be published in future issues of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. Papers included in this bibliography have been separated into categories largely concerned with the technique used and which have been kept as broad as possible. Where the papers in a main category are very numerous (as in Reflection Techniques) they have been divided into sub-categories. Every effort has been made to enter each paper only once in its most relevant section : thus papers describing motion of vascular structures may appear either under Reflection Techniques (Cardiology or Other Organs) or under Doppler techniques.
