phate food additive) was found to very satisfactorily stabilize the actomyosin. SIGNIFICANCE OF DAY LENGTH & AIR CIRCULATION FOR COMMERCIAL LAYERS UNDER HEAT STRESS R. A. ZIMMERMAN, D. C. SNETSINGER AND D.

E.

GREENE, Poultry Research Department, Ralston Purina Company, Checkerboard Square, St. Louis, Mo. 63188 Environmental chambers in the Biotron (Univ. of Wisconsin) were used to study the effects of temperature-air circulation and temperature-lighting regimes on productivity of commercial layers. Commercial layers 30 weeks of age were housed two/cage. There were 128 birds per chamber. In the first trial, birds were exposed to temperature regimes of 16-24° C , 21-29° C , 27-35° C. and 2735° C. with air movement at bird level of 8.5, 7.3, 7.3 and 20.1 meters per minute (m.p.m.), respectively. In the second trial, the temperature regimes were 16-24° C , 24-32° C , 24-32° C. and 24-32° C.

with day length of 14, 14, 18 and 18 hours, respectively. With daily high temperatures reaching 27-35° C , there were significant losses in production, egg size and shell quality. As temperature increased, packed cell volume (PCV) and hemoglobin were reduced while blood volume, as a percent of body weight, increased. Increasing air movement at bird level in the 27-35° C. chamber from 7.3 to 20.1 m.p.m. resulted in increased egg size (5%), feed consumption (12%), shell thickness (10%), shell breaking strength (9%) and PCV (8%). Increasing day length 4 hours (14-18) in the 24-32° C. chamber increased egg size (10%), feed consumption (3%), shell breaking strength (2%) and PCV (5%). Egg production was recorded hourly during the light period in trial 2. Peak hourly production rate was approximately 14 hours after initiation of the dark period. Daily production rate was similar for the two day lengths. However, hourly production rate decreased when day length increased from 14 to 18 hours.

Bibliography—Written and/or Oral Presentation of Scientific Manuscripts Over a period of years, the Editor has accumulated a bibliography of books, bulletins, pamphlets and papers dealing with the written and/or oral presentation of scientific manuscripts, including information on graphics, photographs, charts, illustrations, plates, slides, figures and tables. These references are listed below, without individual comment, in the hope that some of them may be of assistance to persons writing or presenting scientific papers, or to those who attempt to guide students in such matters.
