BIMODAL PERCEPTION OF SPEECH DURING EARLY INFANCY Harry McGurk This paper summarises the results from a series of experiments investigating young infants' capacity to extract phonologically relevant information from l i p movements and to discriminate between audio-visually synchronous and asynchronous speech. Results for 10-26 week old infants are impressively negative. Moreover, positive findings reported by other investigators are resistant to replication. These findings are considered for their implications for theories of the development of bimodal perception of speech.
