to make a transfer case sprocket. Material and process parameters were discussed with reference to properties.

Powder injection moulding symposium Powders for metal injection moulding J.Cornelius, H.Meinhardt. (H.C. Starck GmbH, Laufenburg, Germany.) Powders for MIM were reviewed. Use of atomized ferrous alloy powders and hard unreduced Fe carbonyl powders was noted. It was shown that confidence in the reliability of MIM was increasing leading to MIM of other metals and alloys, including superalloys and refractory metal composites, such as WCu for microelectronic heat sinks. Availability and applications of powders were outlined.

Particle size analysis and characterization of powders for MIM L.Nyborg, E.Johansson. (Chalmers University of Technology, Goteborg, Sweden.) The importance of a range of characteristics of powder for MIM was emphasized. It was reported that laser diffractometry had been used for assessment of volumetric mean parti-

cle sizes. Techniques for measurement of specific surface area and chemical analysis were evaluated. In particular, composition and thickness of oxide films and surface contamination were considered.

Influence of powder particle size on properties of MIM parts H.Burkard et al (Anval OmbH, Germany.) The use of fine or coarse powders for MIM was discussed with regard to lower cost of coarse powders. Effects of powder particle size of 316L and 17-4PH stainless steel powders on injection moulded parts was investigated. Results were given for parts made from prealloyed and master alloy powders. Good results, at lower cost, were reported for parts made from coarser powders after alterations in process conditions.

Binder and feedstock systems for PIM F.Petzoldt, T.Hartwig. (Fraunhofer Inst., IFAM, Bremen, Germany.) Key factors in PIM feedstock quality were identified as homogeneity, mouldability, response to debinding and shrinkage. A range of binders, including soluble wax-polymer based and some novel formulations, were

compared. The need for quality control throughout processing was emphasized. Trends in commercial ready-to-use feedstocks were examined.

Preparation of ceramic injection moulding feedstocks H.Walcher, M.von Witzleben. (Arburg GmbH and InMaTec GmbH, Germany.) Preparation of feedstocks for CIM was discussed with reference to the need to ensure coating of each particle and the effects on moulding. Effects of quality of preparation of two identical feedstocks were investigated. Both feedstocks had similar viscosity. The feedstock with high preparation quality was shown to have better injection characteristics.

Powder injection moulding with two-step binders M.Bayer. (Clariant GmbH, Gersthofen, Germany.) Mixing debinding and sintering of a binder were described and binder performance reviewed. The process of two-step, aqueous solvent/thermal debinding was considered with regard to environmental concerns and equipment in a process chain. Examples of parts, with good geometry/material relationships, were presented.
