Biographical Notes on the Contributors • WILLIAM J. BENJAMIN, OD, P h D William 'Joe' Benjamin obtained his OD and PhD degrees from the College of Optometry at The Ohio State University. An assistant professor at the University of Houston (UH) for his first academic appointment, Dr Benjamin associated with Professor C. Montague Ruben and UH's Institute for Contact Lens Research, an entity which brought $1.4 million to UH during its 5-year span. Dr Benjamin joined the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Optometry in 1988. Professor Benjamin's research is concerned with physiology of the human anterior eye, eyelids, and tear fluid system. He has recently invented a new ocular insert design with potential for ophthalmic and systemic drug delivery.

• BARBARA E. CAFFERY, OD, MS, FAAO Dr Barbara Caffery has practised optometry in Toronto since 1977. Prior to practice, Dr Ca:fiery interned at the Gunderson Eye Clinic, Boston University Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts. She has recently completed her Masters of Science degree in Nutritional Biochemistry. Dr Caffery has been actively involved in academic and clinical research, more recently as in invited researcher at the University of California at Berkeley. She has lectured extensively and authored or co-authored over 40 papers in both national and international optometric and medical research publications on problems of ocular inflammation, dry eye conditions, contact lenses, and contact lens solutions. She participated in many clinical studies in her association as a coauthor with Dr Joshua Josephson. She presently serves as a clinical investigator for Alcon Pharmaceuticals and as a consultant to Allergan Pharmaceuticals in the area of dry eye therapy. She has served as a clinical instructor at the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry Contact Lens Clinic.

• TIMOTHY L. COMSTOCK, OD, MS Dr Timothy Comstock is the Manager of Clinical Evaluations for the Bausch & Lomb Contact Lens DMsion Research Clinic, Rochester, New York. Dr Comstock received his Doctor of Optometry degree from The Ohio State University in 1987. He completed the Cornea and Contact Lens Post-Doctoral Program at Ohio State in 1989, earning a Master of Science degree in Physiological Optics. Dr Comstock's current research activities include the evaluation of new soft contact lens designs, materials, and methods of manufacture. Dr Comstock is a member of the Contact Lens Section of the AOA, the AAO, and the ARVO.

N E I L D. COX

Neil Cox is currently Senior Optometrist at Moorfields Eye Hospital and King's College Hospital, London and is in private contact lens practice. He is a Council Member of the International Glaucoma Association and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Spectaclemakers. Mr Cox has presented papers and lectured on the clinical application of lenses, such as keratoconus, aphakia, keratoplasty, and bandage/therapeutic lenses, with subsequent publication. His hobbies include wine, food, and photography.

• IAN P. DAVIES, BSc(Hons), MBCO, DCLP Ian Davies graduated from Manchester University in 1982, with a first class honours degree in Ophthalmic Optics, and then spent 1 year training at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital before qualifying as a Member of the British College of Optometrists. In the following 5 years Mr Davies worked as a contact lens practitioner in private practice in the UK, combining this with an occasional lectureship at Manchester University and sessional hospital contact lens work. Between 1988 and 1990 he worked at the Allergan Research Clinic in the UK. In 1992 he joined Vistakon as Director of European Professional Services. He has published over 15 papers in the optical press, and given over 100 presentations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. His particular interests are in the evaluation and clinical testing of new contact lens products.

• JOHN DE BRABANDER, OD Dr John de Brabander graduated from the Dutch School of Optometry and Contact Lenses, 'Christian Huygens', Rotterdam in 1969. He also holds a doctoral degree in developmental psychology/learning disabilities from the University of Groningen. He was involved in the early development of soft contact lenses. From 1975 to 1985 he was teaching optometry and contact lenses at the Dutch School of Optometry and Contact Lenses. Since 1988 Dr de Brabander has been involved in research and development for Oculenti, a Dutch organisation that is practising in most academic hospitals in The Netherlands, and since 1989 he has been working at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. Together with Dr Jan H. C. Kok, ophthalmologist, head of the clinic, John has joined the research team in special applications of contact lenses. He is a member of the Dutch Society of Contact Lens Specialists, the ANVC.

• JOSEPH F. MOLINARI, OD, MEd Dr Molinari is currently in private practice in two office locations. In the one he practices primary care optometry using diagnostic and therapeutic drugs and in the other he is an optometric physician. Additionally, he is very active in prescribing and managing all kinds of contact lens patient care. He is highly involved in consultation for various clinical investigations for ophthalmic products and procedures. Dr Molinari is board-certified (Florida) and is hospital credentialed and privileged to provide full-scope optometric care at Tyndall and Eglin Regional Hospitals. Also, Dr Molinari is Chairman of the Bay Point Anterior Segment Symposium, Inc., which, with The Southeastern College of Optometry, develops programs for the continuing education for licensed optometrists and their technicians.

• SUDI PATEL, BSc, MPhil, FBCO Sudi Patel graduated in Ophthalmic Optics in 1976, and then spent a period in hospital and private optometric practice. In 1981 he was appointed Lecturer in Ophthalmic Optics at Glasgow College of Technology, now Glasgow Polytechnic. He was awarded Master of Philosophy degree in .1985 for investigation into the refractive index and power of the cornea in relation to its thickness and hydration. In 1988 he was promoted, on grounds of merit, to Senior Lecturer within the Optometry Department. Dr Patel has lectured at several meetings in various countries on a wide range of optometric topics. His current research interests involve tears, optical and visual performance of soft lenses, and optical modelling in relation to refractive surgery. A past chairman of the British Universities' Committee of Contact Lens Educators, he is an examiner for the British College of Optometrists and an Executive Committee Member of the Scottish National Federation for the Welfare of the Blind.

• KENNETH A. POLSE Dr Kenneth Poise received both his professional and graduate training from the University of California. Since 1965 he has been active in teaching, research, and clinical practice. Currently, he serves as Professor of Optometry and Physiological Optics at the School of Optometry. He has an active research program, which is supported by the National Institutes of Health~ and which focuses on understanding corneal hydration control in normal and diseased eyes, and the effects of stromal acidosis on corneal structure and function. There have been many published articles related to both of these areas. In addition to his teaching and research, Dr Poise was with the School of Optometry as Director of Clinics from 1975-1980, and as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs from 1980-1983. He has also served on many national and international committees. Finally, Dr Poise, along with his colleagues at the school, was instrumental in organising the Morton D. Sarver laboratory for contact lens and corneal research, in which he serves as an active participant in the laboratory's many teaching and research actMties.

• GRAEME YOUNG, BSc, MPhil, FBCO, DCLP Graeme Young graduated from The City University in 1978, after which he worked in private optometric practice in Jersey for 5 years. He returned to England to study for a higher degree, eventually receiving a Master!s degree for a thesis on rigid gas-permeable contact lens extended wear. He was employed by Hydron Europe as a Research Optometrist and, until recently, as UK Director, Research and Development for Allergan Optical. He is an examiner in contact lens practice for the British College of Optometry. Currently he is an independent consultant in contact lens research.
