In 1980 most of the scientists in the USA and Canada who are concerned with the toxicity of halogenated hydrocarbons got together and produced the papers collected in this volume. It is an up to date account of the state of play, of obvious importance to other research workers in this field. Few new and practical conclusions applicable to human welfare can as yet be obtained from this work.

This is a textbook for undergraduate students giving a clearly written account of the fundamentals of freshwater pollution and its effects on living organisms. The chapter on eutrophication is particularly useful, and the account of the work of the water industry is something often missing from this kind of text.

The subtitle 'Industrial Responses to Wastewater Charges' indicates the subject of this book. There are detailed case studies for several USA cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Salem and San Francisco. The remainder of the text deals with particular industries, i.e. tortilla manufacture, fruit and vegetable canning, meat and poultry processing, ice-cream, plating and paint. The many different ways in which economic incentives may (or may not) result in pollution control are illustrated by the various examples. K.M.
