modern techniques in etectromyography and motor and sensory nerve conduction velocity measurement which are largely supplanting the older techniques of electrodiagnosis. Some parts of the chapters on routine electrodiagnosis, chronaxy, strength-duration curves and the like are now beginning to have a quaintly old-fashioned air. Nevertheless. the editor and his many distinguished contributors are to be congratulated on their achievement since although there are now a num-
ber of useful shorter competitors in the field, th~s ~s now the most valuable and comprehensive work on electromyography and related techniques on the market. Although practically all of the illus. trations are line-drawings [there are two coloured plates illustrating histology), they are mostly cleat and comprehensible: as a result the book has been produced at a very reasonable price and can be warmly recommended. Birth and Bra#t Damage, by CYRIL B. COURVILI I . x x i + 4 0 8 pages, M. F. Courville. Pasadena. California. 1971. US $ 20.
sional life. Courville was greatly influenced m h> work by R a m o n y Cajal and this volume demonstrates to the full the means by which the classical techniques of neuropathology have contributed to our understanding of disease mechanisms in the central nervous system. At a time when the discipline of neuropathology is being mcreasingl 3 dominated by newer techniques such as a n i m a experimentation, immunology and electron nticroscopy, it is as well to recall that traditional clinico-pathological correlations are by no means outmoded a n d can still contribute greatl3 tt, knowledge. While not every neuropathologist wilt accept unreservedly D r Courville's concept that perinatal anoxia is the principal cause of perinatal brain damage, his findings and his views are ~,~ carefully documented here that they must comm a n d universal respect. The bibliography of D~ Courville's works at the end of the volume is up. impressive testimony to the author's industry and achievement. Fhis final volume from his prolific pen shows that he was active and thoughtful it the end and it is yet another m o n o g r a p h which wil! assure him o f t lasting place tn the annals of neuropathology
The manifold contributions of the late Dr. Cyril B Courville, achieved during a life-time devoted to the study of neurology and neuropathology., have been appreciated by neurologists and neuropathologtsts the world over. The m a n y readers of this journal who have read with profit such earlier m o n o g r a p h s as Commotio Cerebri. Effects ot Alcohol on the Nervous System ot Man. Forensic Neuropathology and Cerebral Palsy, as well as his textbooks Pathology oJ' the Central Nervous System and Essentials o f Neuropathology will therefore welcome the p o s t h u m o u s publication of this m o n o graph, of which the typescript was completed only some two weeks before his death. In some 340 pages, the author gives a masterly review of the mechanisms of perinatal brain damage and of its effects, and the pages of the volume are profusely illustrated by representative case histories and by p h o t o g r a p h s of the morphological and histological characteristics of the lesions described, drawn from a vast personal experience.
