BLACK & VEATCH DESIGNS WATER PROJECT FACILITIES Black & Veatch Corp has got the go-ahead to proceed with the engineering design of a conveyance system that will deliver raw water from the Nacimiento Reservoir to water purveyors throughout San Luis Obispo County in California, USA. The San Luis Obispo County Flood Control and Water Conservation District awarded the global engineering, consulting and construction company the contract for the US$150 million Nacimiento Water Project. The Black & Veatch-led team will provide design and construction support services for the new water facilities. New facilities include a multiport water intake tower and pump station, approximately 45 miles of transmission pipeline, four storage tanks, two intermediate pump stations, turnouts, a control center, and SCADA and other project control facilities. The intake facility, a 170foot-deep, 30-foot-diameter vertical shaft connected to multiple horizontal intake tunnels, will allow water to be drawn from various depths of the reservoir for optimal water quality control. In addition to providing facilities design, the Black & Veatch team will manage the geotechnical and surveying aspects of the project. Design is scheduled for completion in the winter of 2006/07 and construction is expected to be completed in early 2010.

CHEMICALS DEGUSSAHEADWATERS BUILDING DEMO DSHP PLANT DegussaHeadwaters, a joint venture of Germany’s Degussa AG and Utah, USAbased Headwaters Inc, is building a demonstration plant for the direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (DSHP) in Hanau-Wolfgang, Germany. The joint venture company is currently developing a completely new method of synthesizing hydrogen peroxide for direct use as an oxidant in chemical processes. It is planning to build, own and operate DSHP plants for “over-the-fence” supply to chemical producers around the world. The initial phase of activity by DegussaHeadwaters was the construction and operation of a DSHP pilot plant. The pilot plant has successfully operated since the beginning of this year leading to the next step in commercial development, construction of a DSHP demonstration plant. The DSHP demonstration plant is scheduled to come on stream in the second quarter of 2006 and will be able to produce several thousand metric tons per year of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in methanol.
