FOCUS Other Tata to expand soda ash plant The Indian company Tata Chemicals is to increase soda ash (sodium carbonate) capacity at its Mithapur plant from 875,000 tonnes/y to 1 M tonnes/y. Ready by Mar 2006 at the earliest, the extra capacity will involve an investment of Rup 1.5 bn. Tata predicts strong demand for soda ash, both on its home market and abroad. The sector is being driven by increased demand for float-glass and detergents. The high cost of shipping US soda ash is boosting Indian exports. Salt shortages have hit Chinese soda ash. Tata increased its exports by 17% in the year to Mar 2005 to 150,000 tons. It accounted for 41% of Indian soda ash exports in 2004-2005. New protease beats egg soils Novozymes has developed a new protease that can eliminate all trace of egg stains on tableware. Egg contains a selection of proteins (ovoinhibitors) that inactivate traditional detergent proteases in the washing cycle. But the new protease, Ovozyme 48 T, is specifically designed to resist the ovoinhibitors contained in eggs. Ovozyme 48 T is a novel high-performance engineered version of Savinase. APPLICATIONS Household & personal care Bombril to reactivate factory in Minas Gerais Bombril expects to reactivate its factory at Sete Lagoas in Minas Gerais state, Brazil in Sep 2005. The plant will produce the bar soap Limmpol, after a five year absence from the market, and Sapolio Radium, which is currently produced in Sao Paulo. The unit was closed during 2004 as part of a restructuring programme aimed at bringing Bombril back into profit.
