had not taken place. I have also seen split teeth among some younger patients. Most of the affected teeth seemed to be intact before they split. Other German dentists also report many cases of split teeth. Elian Cunea, Dr. medic. stom. Duisburg, Germany I should like to come to the defense of Dr. David B. Mahler after so many "important" people have taken his article "OneYear Clinical Evaluation of Bonded Amalgam Restorations" (March JADA) to task. My master's degree training taught me several things I would rather not have to think about as a dentist. I would rather not have to think about the fact that using bonded amalgam technique takes more time, uses additional materials and is more costly than the standard amalgam technique that has worked well for more than 100 years. I would rather not think that after using "high-tech" bonded amalgam technique, the results might not be significantly better than the "low-tech" method. Lastly, I would rather not think that what I do for a person may not be the most important thing that can be done for that person (or society). During that same master's degree training, a course called "Comprehensive Health Planning" taught me that if I had no food, whether I even had teeth or not was not terribly important. Our focus becomes narrower and narrower. William A. Russ, D.D.S. Linden, Calif.
