UK PA TENTS Process for the manufacture of cast iron materials having wear-resistant surfaces (Goetzewerke Friedrich Goetze Aktiengesellschaft) Br Pat 1 434 113 (5 May 1976] One or more materials, such as carbides, nitrides or borides, which will separate out from the base cast iron as hard phases on solidification are added. The mixture is cast by a method such as centrifugal casting which allows the hard phases to migrate to one surface because of their different densities. Process for producing glass fibres for reinforced plastics (Owens-Coming Fiberglas Corporation) Br Pat I 434 448 (5 May 1976) A fdm of an unsaturated fatty acid ester of a polyglycol applied to a conventionally resin-sized glass fibre gives lubricating properties without appreciably decreasing the bond between the laminating resin and the glass.

Process for forming material comprising continuous fibre-reinforcement embedded in thermosetting resin (Ube-Nitto Kasei Co Ltd) Br Pat

1 434 481 (5 May 1976) In a continuous process, reinforcement is impregnated with resin and shaped, The shaped material is led into an extrusion die and surrounded by a film of molten thermoplastic resin. Negative pressure is applied to cover the r6inforced material with the film and the whole is immediately cooled to solidify the film. The covered fibre material may be further cut and heat cured, Bonding of inorganic fibres (Magnesium Electron Limited) Br Pat 1 434 738 (5 May 1976) A porous, low density material with high strength and rigidity is made by mixing inorganic fibres with a solution or suspension of a zirconium compound and heating to convert the bonding agent to zirconium oxide,

Electrical insulating prepreg (Mitsubishi Chemical Industries Ltd)

Br Pat I 434 889 (5 May 1976) Prepregs, suitable for making articles subjected to high voltages under adverse weather conditions, which consist of a substrate impregnated with a mixture of an alicyclic epoxy resin, prepared by epoxidising an alkadiene alcohol ester of an alicychc polybasic carboxylic acid, and a latent curing agent such as a Lewis acidamine complex. The prepreg may be heated to a B-stage. Improvements in or relating to impregnating fibre material (Imperial Metal Industries [Kynoch] Ltd) Br Pat I 434 926 (12 May 1976) A continuous tow of fibres which may be impregnated with resin without the need for a doctor blade by passing it under a dispenser from which a controlled flow of resin falls so that all the resin is effectively retained in the tow. Cast resins reinforced with carbon fibre material (Siemens AktiengeseUschaft) Br Pat

1 435 223 (12 May 1976) Apparatus for X-ray or 3'-ray examination or therapy, which has components made from a cast resin reinforced with carbon fibres. The castings are X-ray transparent and at the same time mechanically strong,

Method for producing carbon fibres (Asahi Kasei Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha) Br Pat 1 435 447 (12 May 1976) High strength and carbonization yield result from the use of fibres of a copolymer of at least 85% acrylonitrile and 0.05 to 15% dialkyl vinyl phosphonate. One or both of the alkyl groups may be halogenated. Improvements in or relating to fibre

glass

(PPG Industries Inc) Br Pat 1 436 237 (19 May 1976) A crimped fibreglass mass of continuous strands interlocked in random directions and planes is made by attenuating the fibres at extremely high speed onto a moving collecting surface. The high inertial force in the fibres as they strike the surface imparts a crimping action producing mats with fibres interlocked with a needled appearance.

Wear.resistant surface composite materials and methods for producing same (Union Carbide Corporation) Br Pat 1 436 768 (26 May 19 76) A molten matrix, such as aluminium, is contacted with filaments of 2 to 15/am diameter composed of at least one monocarbide of tantalum, titanium or tungsten and allowed to solidify.

Method of producing fibre-containing

A protected laminate article and

building members (Gypsum-Research SA) Br Pat

(FMC Corporation) Br Pat

1 435 433 (12 May 1976) Fibrous material and calcium sulphate are suspended in an excess of water relative to the amount required to set •the binder and formed into a fleece by removing most of the excess mechanically. The calcium sulphate is the hemihidrate having a specific surface area per unit weight which remains substantially unaltered in the aqueous suspension and is made by calcining in the presence of 0.05 to 0.8% by weight of certain inorganic chlorides,

1 436 882 (26May 1976) A method of protecting the surface of polyester/glass laminates from air inhibition while at the same time allowing a decorative surface to be applied consists of coating a regenerated cellulose sheet with a blend of 25 to 90% of an alkylene terephthalate with 75 to 10% of a randomly polymerised alkylene dicarboxylate other than a terephthalate. This coating is applied to the curing polyester and after cure the cellulose layer is stripped off.
