Books Behaviour Problems of Children. J. C. Marfatia, 1Vi.B.B.S., D.P.M., Bombay, 1956, The Association of Pediatricians of India~ 159 pages. Price Rs. 6/4. While there is nothing partlcular]y new in this discussion of behavior problems, it is of unusual interest as the first book of its kind to come out of India, and further that it is sponsored by the pediatric association of India. The writing is concise and clear, and free from psychiatric jargon. The author has full knowledge of the advances and developments in child psychiatry that h a w occurred in many countries in recent years, and has succeeded in his objective. M a t e r n a l Emotions. Niles Newton, Ph.D., New .York, 1955, Paul B. ttoeber, Inc., 140 pages. Price $3.00. While the studies of Mrs. Newton of the department of obstetrics at the UnhTersity of Pennsylvania are of more importance to the obstetrician than the pediatrician, this attempt to study objectively the influences and effects of maternal emotions will be found of considerable interest. The author makes no startling claims for the results of the studies, but rather that certain findings indicate a need for further study. Thus, for example, eight specific differences were found between a group of women who were anxious to breast feed their babies compared with a group who expressed little desire to nurse. P r e n a t a l and P a r a n a t a l P a c t o r s in t h e Dev e l o p m e n t of Childhood B e h a v i o r Disorders. ~[artha E. Rogers, Se.D., Abraham M. Li]ienfe]d, M.D., and Benjamin Pasamanick, IVLD., Baltimore, ]955, Johns Hopkins University, 155 pages.

A report of a study, including statistical data, carried out in 1953-1954 ia the School of Hygiene and Public Health, in an attempt

to throw light on the question of whether or not a relationship exists between behavior problems in childhood and disorders occurring in pregnancy and at the time of the birth of the child. Although the results are rather inconclusive, the authors found that a history of a toxemia of pregnancy was more frequent for the case group (471 children) than for the control group (359 children). The authors feel that their findings justify the inclusion of prenatal and paranatal factors in considering the causes of behavior disorders in children, and that their findings indicate a need for further study of the question.
