the premise. For example, Chapter 4, covering the congressional elections. refers to over 60 sources. including state and federal documents. over IO newspapers from the period, letters to the author from archivists and historians of note, numerous state archive collections. dissertations, and journal articles. The 45 maps included in The Atku are remarkable. Removed from the accompanying text and data of The At& the reader would likely be able to use the maps alone to gain a clear picture of the political evolution of the Confederate States. The consistent base maps, use of color and, frequently. scale greatly enhance the reader’s ability to visualize and interpret the phenomena depicted. Combined with the incredible wealth of data in the appendices, 48 statistical tables. and copious endnotes and footnotes, the user has access to a wealth of information on the congress. Martis himself recognizes the importance of the data. commenting on page 89 about the “. . . quantitative treasure of data concerning not only the history and policies of the Confederate Congress. but also the geographical-political differences within the Civil War South” (p. 89) that the documents provide. This is a ground-breaking work providing much information. which allows greater understanding and analysis of the workings of the Confederate Congresses. It is also the first work to illustrate the congresses cartographically. A review of the sources cited by Martis shows that there are many works on the Confederate Congresses: however, of these, there are very few full-length analytical publications dedicated to this subject. Martis cites three notable sources: The Anatomy of thc~ Cor!federrrtr Cor~gress by Alexander and Beringer (1972), Tlw Corlf;Ddercrte Congress by Yems ( 1960) and Biogrrrphiurl Register of the Confrdcrcrte Congress by Warner and Yearns (1975). In fact. in the chapter discussing the roll-call voting of the congress (Chapter 5). Martis states that much of the analysis is based on Alexander and Beringer’s measurements of the “combined and multiple roll-call voting” (p. 89). The Atlas, along with these works. provides a lucid analysis ofthe geographical and political impacts and outcomes of the Congresses. This work has been lauded as “definitive.” “landmark.” and “pathbreaking.” To this list this reviewer would add the accolade, “indispensable.” Of the over 60.000’ titles on the U.S. Civil War, The Historical Atlas ofthe C’mgress of the Confedercrte States oj’Atneriw will stand out. It should be commended not only for its insightful geographic analysis on a subject never before analyzed cartographically. but also for its ease of use, documentation of sources. and scholarship. It is a truly magnificent work that fosters greater understanding of the history of the United States.
