Microwave Spectroscopy. By WALTER GORDY, Professor of Physics, Duke University; WILLIAM V. SMITH, Chairman of the Physics Department, University of Delaware; and RALPH F. TRAMBARULO, Assistant Professor of Physics, Pennsylvania State College. John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York, N. Y., 1953. xii + 446 pp. Price $3.00. * This is an excellent exposition of the instrumentation, basic theory, uses, and limitations of microwave spectroscopy for chemists, physicists, and other scientists who may find this kind of spectroscopy of some interest or value. The authors are foremost researchers in the field, and the senior author, at least, has done important work in the closely related field of molecular spectroscopy in the infrared region. The types of microwave spectrometers are discussed along with details concerning the unusual, to most spectroscopists, microwave spectrographic components. Considerable space is devoted to the theoretical background of molecular spectroscopy with, of course, emphasis on those parts directly concerned with microwave effects. The Stark and Zeeman effects, line shapes and intensities, collision broadening, nuclear quadrupole couplings, and the determination of molecular dimensions are all adequately discussed with sufficient references for those who desire to go further. For the chemist the applications to chemical analysis are discussed with restraint in spite of the phenomenally high spectral resolution attainable with microwaves. The limitations, such as the necessity for the molecules to be polar, are duly mentioned. Perhaps many chemists would have appreciated a more detailed treatment in this section, but microwave applications are in their infancy. The book is well constructed with many illustrations, references, and tables in a large appendix. Anyone suspecting that microwave spectroscopy could help him should certainly consult this book. R. C. GORE, Stamford, Connecticut
