Image analysis: a $95 mill ion market in the USA by 1994? ife science laboratories in the USA are expected to triple their purchases of computerized image analysis systems in six years, according to a study by Frost & Sullivan. Sales of $31.9 million in 1988 should reach $95.4 million in 1994. Frost & Sullivan expects the fastest market growth to come from low-end systems (under $25,000) whose share of total sales is forecast to rise from 40% in 1988 to 43% in 1994. Retrofitting of microscopes purchased without image analysis systems will support this trend. High-end systems ($65,000 or more) are forecast to drop slightly in market share from 26% to 23% over the same period, though still

roughly tripling dollar sales. Sophisticated systems are needed for stereological analysis, real-time fluorescence analysis and threedimensional reconstruction. Midrange systems are expected to hold steady at 34% of the market. The image analysis market is highly fragmented, with most equipment produced by private companies employing fewer than 20 people with less than $2 million annual sales. Since 1986, established instrumentation companies microscope manufacturers and have also begun introducing such systems. The price of report #A2069, The U.S. Market for cell-based image processing and analysis systems, is $2,650.

1989 to $11.3 million in 1993. Health care will retain the largest market segment at $29.4 million and will be comprised mainly of single analyte instruments. Characteristic of biosensor manufacturers is that they are small, privately held companies founded by university researchers. As the market develops, the Japanese are increasing their presence. The price of report #A2139 “The Biosensor Market in the U.S.” is $2400.

(60 pages) Filling process controls are not only required by law, they are also necessitated by economic considerations Filling processes are very complex operations that are subject to a wide range of influences. For those involved in choosing control systems, a recently revised booklet on SQC (statistical quality control) is now available from Mettler at a nominal charge. The first part of the guide provides a detailed description of the fundamentals and the different types of controls and control sysGuidelines for decision tems. making are found in the second part. rost and Sullivan forecast a bright future for biosensors: “a $69 million U.S. biosensor market by 1993-and by then, a sharply rising market entering the take-off stage”. The total 1989 market was estimated at $13 6 million. The report sees the fastest growing application market over the next five years in monitoring and control of process industries. This estimated $3.1 million market in 1989 is projected to reach $24.7 million by 1993 The environmental and security applications market is also a growth area and is expected to increase from $1.9 million in
