Military desalination deal Biosourcc Inc, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA has won a USS4.46 million contract from the Defense Advanced Research Products Agency (DARPA), based in Arlington, Virginia, USA, to develop flow though capacitor technology to desalinate water. The technoh)gy uses alternating electrodes of activated carbon to desalinate water. Activated carbon is conductive and has a high surface area of up to 3000 m2/g. A small voltage is used to attract dissolved contaminants to the surface of the carbon and once the capacitor is fully charged, the electrodes are short circuited through a load. This regenerates the capacitor and causes the absorbed contaminants to be released

from the carbon as a small volume of concentrated liquid waste. USA Defense Department officials say the technology cnuht solve the logistical problems of how to nn)ve water to the front line in the event of a conflict. This technology cnuld be used in mohile units aboard aircraft carriers and submarines at military bases. Biosouree is developing the technology with Sabrex of Texas lnc, which already manufactures a water purifier that uses flow through capacitor technology.
