Building a future for pultrusion This issue contains several features investigating the use of composites in construction applications. In the residential market reduced maintenance is a big issue in favour of composites but replacement of traditional building materials is a slow process. One success story is the progress made by pultruded profiles in the window market over the past 20 years. Fibreglass is now a material which must be considered when designing a new product and its use in the window market is growing, whereas aluminium and wood are declining and PVC’s growth has slowed significantly. Where will the next opportunity be? Our feature on pages 20-27 highlights other areas where pultruded products are predicted to be important in the future,

including custom buildings, residential construction, seawalls, railings and fencing, and pergolas and arbours. Pultruded composites are also building a name for themselves in the truck trailer market. On pages 34-37 we hear how one company has developed commercial trailers which weigh less than aluminium designs, lowering transport costs.
