The membrane is an alternative to centrifugal or pre-coat filter technology in these market sectors.

SARTORIUS CONSOLIDATES ITS BRAND IMAGE Sartorius AG has unveiled a new brand strategy as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen awareness of the group’s diversity of activities. The company has announced that its fermentation product line, B. Braun Biotech International, as well as its two industrial mechatronics product groups, GWT and Boekels, will now be sold using the Sartorius brand. Its biotechnology laboratory and laboratory mechatronics product lines, Vivascience and Acculab, will retain their individual brand names, although their affiliation with Sartorius will be visually emphasized. Dr Joachim Kreuzburg, spokesman for the company’s executive board, said the revision of the brand strategy was designed to reduce the complexity of the company’s product portfolio to various stakeholders. “We are focusing on our core brand Sartorius and thus sharpening its profile and awareness by customers,” he said. “The sales volume associated with the Sartorius brand alone will increase by a good

LYDALL UNIFIES GROUP STRUCTURE Lydall Inc has reorganized its operations by uniting the company’s existing operating groups into a single corporate structure. David Freeman, president and CEO of Lydall, said the reorganization was the necessary latest step in the company’s evolution and would bring greater efficiencies. “In 2000, Lydall moved from a decentralized, division structure to a group organization, segregating our filtration, thermal and transport businesses,” he said. “Our purpose was to capitalize on the synergies within our core businesses and to strategically position the company. The time has now come to take the next organizational step.” Freeman said the corporate structure, introduced on 1 January 2004, would streamline the organization enabling it to be managed as a cohesive whole. “We seek to reduce overhead redundancies, move closer to our customers and markets, leverage our manufacturing knowledge, and solidify a Lydall corporate culture,” Freeman said. As a result of the new organization, Lydall’s group structure has been eliminated. In its place a manufacturing council and a sales and marketing council have been formed at

the corporate level to provide strategic direction for the respective functions companywide. Freeman is heading the former body, while COO Chris Skomorowski is in charge of the latter council.

BUSS-SMS ACQUIRES CANZLER BUSINESS UNITS Buss-SMS GmbH Verfahrenstechnik has expanded its existing thermal separation operations and moved into membrane technology through the acquisition of two business units from Canzler GmbH. Buss-SMS bought the two Canzler divisions for an undisclosed sum, following the commencement of insolvency proceedings for the German firm. Following the acquisition, the company has changed its name to Buss-SMS-Canzler GmbH to reflect its broader product offerings. The name

change continues a tradition for the 80-year-old firm, which already consists of the merged thermal separation operations of the former SMS, Luwa and Buss companies. With plants in Butzbach, Germany, and Pratteln, Switzerland, Buss-SMS had 155 employees and an annual turnover of approximately 25 million prior to the takeover of the Canzler business units. It offers solutions for demanding tasks in evaporation, drying, devolatilization, reacting, mixing and distillation. Buss-SMS will open a further branch office in Canzler’s base of Düren to integrate the acquisitions and will take 18 employees from the company’s sales, process engineering and mechanical engineering departments. Canzler had a total of 83 employees when the insolvency proceedings commenced and was active in nonferrous metals fabrication and spiral heat exchangers, in addition to the activities acquired by Buss-SMS. A spokesperson for BussSMS said the acquisitions provided a good fit with the company’s existing operations. “The focus of Canzler’s thermal separation technology on evaporation in the oleochemical, pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries ideally complements the Buss-SMS evaporation technology with its focus on specialty, basic and polymer chemistry, while the membrane technology opens up completely new application areas,” he said.
