PATENTS
Patents Edge seal ring Assignee: Advanced Micro Devices Inc, USA A metal edge seal ring is formed in a trench made up of a large number of short, connected legs arranged in a perpendicular fashion. Metal is deposited in the trench, and because the metal comprises many short segments, rather than several long, straight sections, the subsequent chemical-mechanical polishing step does not cause significant cupping of the metal in the trench. Patent number: US 6362524 Inventors: R.C. Blish, K.O. Taylor, D.C. Greenlaw Publication date: 26 March 2002
Peripheral seal for an insulating glass unit Assignee: Guardian Industries Corporation, USA A vacuum insulating glass (IG) unit is provided with an indium inclusive peripheral/edge seal, which is preferably deposited originally in the form of a viscous slurry. The use of such material for the edge seal permits lower processing temperatures to be used. This, in turn, may in some embodiments allow thermally tempered glass to be used in IG units without losing substantial temper during the fabrication process. It may also permit certain coatings to be used, and/or allow fewer supporting pillars to be used. Patent number: US 6365242 Inventor: V.S. Veerasamy Publication date: 2 April 2002
Cable connector seal Assignee: Sumitomo Wiring Systems Ltd, Japan This patent describes a sealable connector. A ‘female terminal’ is located at the rear end of an inner casing; this is press-connected with the cable. An inner casing and an elastic plug are positioned in a housing area of the outer casing. The elastic plug is housed in an elastically compressed condition on an inner peripheral side of a tubular portion. The latter portion is deformed outwards by its elastic force. A pressing member, provided with a control piece, is mounted on the rear end of the tubular portion. Because the control piece is pressed down by sandwiching it between the outer peripheral side of the upper wall and lower wall of the tubular portion, the outwardly deformed sections of the tubular portion are controlled and can return to roughly their original shape. Gas turbine rotor bimetallic ring seal Assignee: AlliedSignal, USA (now Honeywell) A method for making a bimetallic ring seal has been developed. It has a nickel core that is covered by a first layer of platinum which has an inner dense portion and a second outer portion, both of which plastically deform in the presence of a load. The method includes the step of applying a porous layer of platinum over the dense layer by electroless plating in a platinum bath comprising 0.8–1.2 g/l platinum as diammine dinitrite salt Pt(NH3)2(NO22)2; 50–100 ml/l of 25% ammonium hydroxide; and 0.3–1.5 g/l hydrazine hydrate (N2H4— H2O) at a temperature in the range 75–90°C, and at a plating rate in the range 0.5–3.0 µm/h and then plastically deforming the ring seal under load. Patent number: US 6363610 Inventors: D. Narasimhan, A.S. Kozlov, S.H. Halfmann, M.C. Morris, T.E. Strangman Publication date: 2 April 2002
Sealant ring Assignee: Visteon Global Technologies Inc, USA This invention covers a method of forming a sealant ring within a throttle body assembly, which is made up of a cylindrical housing, defined by an essentially cylindrical wall and circular plate that is pivotally disposed on the wall. An annular gap is formed between the plate and the wall. The method involves depositing an essentially continuous ring of sealant composition around the throttle body assembly. This continuous ring covers the annular gap. The sealant composition is dispensed from a needle applicator which is disposed above the annular gap and which follow a circular path around the throttle body. On drying, the sealant composition forms a continuous seal that covers the gap of the throttle body. Patent number: US 6365226 Inventor: Z. Wu Publication date: 2 April 2002
High temperature slip-sealing grommet systems Assignee: Tyco Electronics Corporation, USA A seal kit for use in a system that seals an elongated heating cable includes a coneshaped elastomeric grommet, several moulded plastic parts, and a compression spring. The compression grommet forms a sealing interface between itself and a moulded plastic enclosure body, and between itself and an outer jacket of a heating cable. The cable ends are sealed within a sealed interior space of the enclosure body. A cup-shaped surface of a moulded plastic part, which faces a congruent
cone-shaped surface of the elastomeric grommet, forms a slip-plane. The compression spring transfers energy to compress the elastomeric grommet. This causes it to expand radially against an interior wall of the enclosure body and against an outer jacket of the electrical cable, and prevents that region of the grommet from becoming bonded over a high temperature operating interval to the inside wall of the enclosure body. When the sealing system cools down, the elastomeric grommet slips longitudinally along at least the slip-plane and thereby maintains a radial seal against the outer jacket of the heating cable. Patent number: WO 02/27884 Inventor: W.B. Dong Publication date: 4 April 2002
Flameproof sealing mechanism Assignee: Robertshaw Controls Co, USA A sealing mechanism that can be used to establish a seal between a barrier material and a conduit that extends through this material, has been developed. The mechanism includes a specially configured opening formed in the barrier material and a grommet component that is inserted into the opening and locked in place by slightly rotating it. Patent number: WO 02/27230 Inventors: T. Uong, C. Boehnlein Publication date: 4 April 2002
Pressure regulating buffer seal Assignee: Macrotech Polyseal Inc, USA A buffer seal that has been adapted for use in a seal assembly is the subject of this patent. It includes at least a primary seal, and the seal assembly has been adapted to provide a fluid seal between two machine elements that move relative to each other. For example, this may be a piston or rod moving within a cylindrical bore. The buffer seal comprises a sealing element and a resiliently deformable biasing component. The material, shape and/or volume of the biasing unit are selected to provide a desired biasing force sufficient to ensure that that surface of the sealing element remains in contact with the surface of the first machine element, but also to simultaneously ensure that the other surface of the sealing element remains in contact with the surface of the second machine element. The buffer seal may be further configured to inhibit the migration of system contaminants to the primary seal. Patent number: WO 02/27220 Inventor: D.K. Zitting Publication date: 4 April 2002
