required. An optical test head is used to measure the velocity of the major moving parts of the unit under test. In addition to checking for correct operation of the sub-assembly the FTS stores a 'signature' that characterises specific electrical/operating parameters, which is then used to give warning of changes in the performance of the equipment during vibration testing or routine maintenance.
SI (Systems and Instrumentation) Limited have developed an ultrasonic thickness gauge which performs automatic monitoring of moving materials or manual gauging of complex shaped stationary products. Originally developed for critical aerospace gauging applications, the Novascope 2000 has been

redesigned to include such diverse applications as composite materials, waxes and rubbers. Digital LED readout and supplementary dual trace oscilloscope display are included in the design qualifying and set up. The Novascope operates in both non-contact and contact probe modes. A variety of probes is available including standard contact, non-contact and focussed types.
Developed for industrial and scientific applications, Kane-May Instrumentation's KM 10000 series of digital thermometers measure temperature from --213°(2 to + 1820°(2. Conversion of displayed values from Centigrade to Fahrenheit or vice-versa can be made. Other touch-selectable functions include constant monitoring and storage of maximum and minimum probe temperature and memory storage of any displayed temperature. Microprocessor control provides an indication of the function selected and automatically warns of over and under ranging of a particular thermocouple, broken thermocouple or incorrect entry of a

Test set monitors missiles Frazer-Nash (Electrbnics) Limited has designed a functioning test set (FTS) to monitor the function and performances of an advanced form of missile launcher during its preproduction test programmes. The FTS is used to check for correct functioning of the launcher by monitoring electrical circuit paths. The test set, based on the Zilog Z-80 microprocessor, first initiates pneumatic functioning of the equipment on the rig and then allows rapid testing and gauge diagnosis by means of preselected test procedures. Different operating modes may be selected to test either specific single electrical pathways or multiple pathways as
difference value. Additionally, the KM 10000 constantly carries out a range of integral self-test routines, which, in a fault condition automatically provides a numerically coded indication in the display panel to aid fault diagnosis.

Caliper inspects castings Magnaflux's digital velocity caliper has been designed for quality control and inspection techniques on grey iron castings, By utilising the relationship between ultrasonic velocity and the degree of nodularity in grey iron, the Magnaflux system can be used for quality assess-

The caliper can operate on materials with ultrasonic velocities from 3800 to 6300 m is and thicknesses of 12.5 to 84 mm. The display module gives a direct digital readout of ultrasonic velocities and incorporates an "adjustable upper and lower .threshold, together with audio alarm and relay facilities to operate remote spray markers and mechanical sorters.
