PH NEWS C We now have the opportunity to provide members with resources for their professional practice as well. A Professional Practice List Serve has been established that members can use to share questions and information about these issues. In addition, a Professional Issues Committee has been established to provide direction for the Executive Board in meeting members’ needs in this area and to help identify needed resources for our members. In addition to participating in the NP Marketing Campaign, we are encouraging members to identify and market their own expertise in their practice, their chapters, and nationally through the Speakers Bureau. Further, members are encouraged to speak to parent groups, write for parent magazines, offer to serve on child health advisory boards, assist with health fairs, and provide educational programs for child care providers. Through these opportunities, pediatric nurse practitioners have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge to a wider population and differentiate the role of

the NP, the pediatrician, and the physician assistant. Clarke and Shyavitz (1983, p. 45) state that one of the first steps in the marketing process is “distinguishing one’s services from other services competing in the same marketplace.” These efforts will be complementary to the NP Marketing Campaign and are essential in the continuing implementation of our role. This year’s Professional Practice Forum at the National Conference will provide the opportunity to discuss professional practice issues and make recommendations to the Executive Board. We invite you to sign up for a discussion group as you register. Executive Board members and other NAPNAP leaders will be leading the discussions, which will give you the opportunity to meet them and share your ideas. Finally, President-Elect Julie Novak and I are also interested in developing leadership and mentoring programs for our members. Through these programs and workshops, we will continue to develop and strengthen members’ leadership skills and knowledge

essential for implementing the NP role. Your Executive Board believes that our organization has the responsibility to support the development of our members’ clinical skills, professional practice skills, and overall leadership and mentoring skills. This undertaking will not be accomplished all at once. However, we want you to be looking forward to the opportunities and activities in these areas in the future. As always, I welcome your comments, questions, or suggestions. You may e-mail me at deloian.barbara@ tchden.org.
