Call for papers for Special Issue NICOTINE: SCIENCE, REGULATION AND POLICY Editors: Gerry Stimson* and Kirsten Bell** *London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Imperial College London **University of British Colombia The science and understanding of nicotine is rapidly changing. The arrival of new nicotine delivery systems (electronic cigarettes), along with other lower risk alternatives to smoking (such as snus and reduced risk products), is forcing rapid changes in nicotine science, public understanding of nicotine, and the regulatory landscape. This impacts upon on a wide range of stakeholders including: consumers, who now have a wider range of sources of nicotine; researchers, with a new research agenda and new methods for studying the use of nicotine containing products; public health and tobacco control advisors, challenged regarding the role of these products within the landscape of smoking reduction; parliamentarians and policy makers who are faced with developing regulatory frameworks; manufacturers and distributors who are developing new products or whose business model is challenged by disruptive products; and national, regional and international tobacco control organisations who need to decide where new nicotine products fit within various models of regulation including as a tobacco, medicinal or consumer product. Abstracts are invited for contributions to a forthcoming special issue of the International Journal of Drug Policy (http://www.journals.elsevier.com/international-journal-of-drug-policy). Submission and selection process Abstracts outlining the proposed paper (not to exceed 350 words) should be emailed to Gerry Stimson gerry.stimson@gmail,com by June 30th 2014. The email subject heading should read “IJDP Special Issue Nicotine”.. Papers invited for full submission will be submitted in the normal way through the IJDP online
submission process (http://ees.elsevier.com/drugpo/) and manuscripts will be due by September 30th 2014. All manuscripts are subject to the normal IJDP peer review. About the International Journal of Drug Policy The International Journal of Drug Policy (http://www.ijdp.org/home) provides a forum for the dissemination of current research, reviews, debate, and critical analysis on drug use (alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs) and drug policy in a global context. It seeks to publish material on the social, political, legal, and health contexts of psychoactive substance use, both licit and illicit. The journal is particularly concerned to explore the effects of drug policy and practice on drug-using behaviour and its health and social consequences. IJDP is official academic journal partner for the Global Forum on Nicotine which will be held in Warsaw 27-28th June 2014 www.gfn.net.co. Abstracts submitted before April 30th are also eligible for consideration for presentation at the conference, for which a £500 contribution towards travel and registration may be made.
Paper types We encourage submissions that focus on issues related to the use of nicotine following one of the six types of contributions: x x x x x x
Research papers: Research papers are usually based on original empirical analyses, but may also be discursive critical essays. These papers are usually between 3,000 and 5,000 words. Policy or historical analysis: These are focused specifically around contemporary or historical analyses of policies and their impacts, and are usually between 3,000 and 5,000 words. Commentary: These papers explore in depth a particular topic or issue for debate, and may also include evidence and analysis. The Editor may invite expert responses to commentaries for publication in the same issue. Commentaries are usually between 2,500 and 4,000 words. Research methods papers: These papers explore methodological innovations in the field and are usually between 3,000 and 5,000 words. Viewpoint: Short comments and opinion pieces of up to 1,200 words which raise an issue for discussion, or comprise a case report on an issue relevant to research, policy, or practice. Review: These papers seek to review systematically a particular area of research, intervention, or policy. Reviews are usually between 4,000 and 8,000 words.
