site). New Jersey is the only state which has not yet given its approval to the research burn and this delay could further jeopardize the planned test burn. With the hurdles of state consistency rulings, public opposition, regulatory uncertainty, and proposed legislation yet to be overcome, the future of ocean incineration in the US remains highly questionable.

Canadian West Coast Oil Exploration A 2-month long combined Federal and Provincial government set of Hearings into oil exploration off Canada's west coast drew to a close at the end of October. Community Hearings were held in coastal towns and villages, with General Hearings starting 21 October in Vancouver and Victoria. Intervenors emphasized lack of relevant environmental information, both safety and resource related. There was an unexpected introduction to the Hearings of a provincial government pamphlet previously released to an east coast exposition stating that west coast exploration would start when the Hearings report was completed. The Chairman expressly commented that no decision had yet been made. The final report by the combined government panel was expected at the end of November.

Round-the-World News Ireland According to a recent report in Lloyd's List (December, 1985) exploratory talks are in progress between the Irish Sea Fisheries Board and a Norwegian Consortium about the possibility of establishing a fish farming project on Ireland's West Coast. The project, which will cost £14 million, would involve anchoring a 75 000 t tanker either at Killarny Harbour, County Galway or in Galway Bay. The salmon would be reared in eight tanks on board the ship, which would be capable of producing 3000 t of salmon annually.

The Workshop was held for government scientists and environmental contractors to hear about and discuss the progress of specific projects, to hear invited speakers on topics of general interest, and to discuss potential investigations. Italy Four people were killed and about 170 injured by an explosion which set the Italian State Oil Company's (AGIP) depot on fire on 21 December 1985. The blast occurred as super grade petrol was being pumped into one of the storage tanks by pipeline from the 30 000 t oil tanker Agip Gela. Some oil flowed into the sea but was contained by booms.
