NDB technology enables multiple polymer additives to be incorporated in non-dusting physical forms, thereby removing the need for customers to import individual raw materials, which could subsequently reduce administrative work and logistics costs.
Rohm and Haas to cut workforce Speciality chemicals company Rohm and Haas may make redundant more than 1200 of its 18,000 employees worldwide in a reorganisation which will cut costs at a time of reduced demand for some of the company's plastics and chemical products, according to reports in the US press. The company claims that demand has slowed, in particular, for polymers which it manufactures for use in paints and adhesives, and for materials it produces for making printed-circuit boards and semiconductors The company says that the 'lay-offs' are expected to amount to 6-7% percent of its work force of 18,000 in some 140 manufacturing and research sites in 27 countries around the world. It also says that when the initiatives are complete they are expected to result in annual operating savings of at least US$200 million by the fourth quarter of 2002.

MARKETING Carbon black set to reach 195 000 tonnes in 2001 The Freedonia Group of Cleveland, Ohio, USA, says that worldwide demand for carbon black, which is used as an additive in plastic resins, is forecast to reach 195 000 tonnes in 2001. Carbon black has not kept pace with total demand in plastics because much recent growth in the plastics industry has been for packaging resins such as polyethylene and polystyrene, which do not require carbon black, says the company. Demand for carbon black is concentrated in engineering plastics and wire and cable applications. Other applications for additives include pipes and conduits, films, coatings, magnetic media, appliances, audio and video cassettes, toys and automotive parts. Increased interest in the properties of special blacks has led to a level of specialisation in this segment which is largely absent from commodity-grade rubber blacks, says Freedonia. All global producers offer lines of special blacks tailored to specific uses and supported by a high level of technical assistance. Because performance is the principal determinant of grade choice, differentiation among competing lines is a key marketing strategy.

Additives for Polymers
Carbon black is valuable in plastics applications because it remains stable and retains its colour during the high temperatures which are used to process plastics. Because it tends to be electrically conductive in nature, only grades aftertreated to increase volatile content will exhibit high dry resistivity values. Volatile content acts as an electrically insulating layer on the surface of carbon blacks. In its application as a plastic filler, it competes with organic and mineral fillers.

E-COMMERCE Engel acquires equity in Omnexus Engel, a manufacturer of injection-moulding machinery has acquired an equity stake in Omnexus, the B2B global plastics 'e-market place'. Engel, with operations in Europe and North America joins previously announced founding and leadership suppliers Atofina, BASF AG, Bayer AG, Biesterfeld, Clariant, Dow Chemical, DSM, DuPont, Ellis & Everard, PolyOne, Resinex & Ravago, Solvay and Ticona. Omnexus says that Engel is the first equipment supplier it has announced, and it demonstrates its intention to expand its business model far beyond resins. Omnexus members can now select, compare and purchase a wide range of injection-moulding machines, and purchase resins and search for content. Additionally, Omnexus says that it expects to announce new technological capabilities which will provide functionality to address the equipment, tooling and MRO needs of plastics processors. With the addition of Engel to the ranks of equity holders, Omnexus currently has a total of 14 global companies holding a financial stake. There are now more than 20 global suppliers which will sell products through the plastics 'emarket place'. ©2001 Elsevier Science
