Faster and Safer Angioplasties Instead of requiring open-heart surgery, the Bard cardiopulmonary support system connects to the circulation through hook-ups with the femoral artery and vein of the leg. The procedure is therefore much faster and less traumatic than conventional heart/lung support devices. The Bard system is currently used in conjunction with coronary angioplasty in patients who until now would have been considered too weak or risky for the procedure.
