new edition of government handbook • The fifth edition of Occupational Outlook Handbook has been published by the United States Department of Labor bureau of labor statistics. The Handbook is widely used in secondary schools and colleges by both counselors and students as a source of valuable career information. Descriptions of more than 650 vocational fields are presented along with employment predictions based on nationwide statistics and data in the department. The section on pharmacists has an explanation of the nature of the work, where employed, qualifications, employment outlook, earnings and working conditions. Readers of the material on pharmacy are referred to APHA for career information and the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education for a list of accredited colleges of pharmacy. Any pharmacist wishing to purchase the 1961 Occupational Outlook Handbook as a reference for himself and community may order it from Superintendent of Documents, Washington 25, D .C. ($4.50 a copy.) Reprints of the section on pharmacists are available from the same source (5 cents a copy).
space age health careers • To stimulate thinking of young citizens about the possibilities of a future career which will correlate health and space, the National Health Council has published a 24-page, two-color, well illustrated brochure on New Careers in the Health Sciences. It supplements the widely used Health Careers Guidebook released in 1955 by NHC. Pharmacists might well read it also to update their understanding of current trends
Motivating an outstanding student to choose pharmacy as a career brought special recognition to pharmacist Gustave Samet of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His protege, Joel B. Portnoff of Temple University, was a winner in the Lunsford Richardson Pharmacy Awards competition in 1961 and the awards committee honored Samet by presenting him with an inscribed mortar and pestle along with a certificate of appreciation. The awards are sponsored each year by The William S. Merrell Company, division of Richardson-Merrell, Inc. to encourage pharmacy students to explore current problems of the profession and to submit manuscripts on a designated problem.

scholarships on increase • Scholarships for pharmacy students are becoming more numerous each year with, it is interesting to note, increasing support coming from practicing pharmacists themselves. They are beginning to realize their responsibility for providing funds to assist the well qualified potential practitioner with his education. --Alumni of West Virginia Universit y college of pharmacy have established a scholarship fund and when this fund reaches the desired total, the income from it will be used for student aid. - - Brooklyn College of Pharmacy has announced 50 one-hundred-dollar scholarships made possible by Theodore A. Blackman, president of Premo Laboratories, to commemorate the golden anniversary of his graduation as well as the 75th anniversary of Brooklyn College of Pharmacy. .
- -For the third year the Mid-South Pharmaceutical Research Foundation has provided scholarships for students at the University of Mississippi. The number of annual awards varies from year to year. Currently four pharmacy students are assisted by the funds made possible by the generosity of community pharmacists in the state of Mississippi and the mid-south.
touring APhA exhibit • The careers exhibit is scheduled for three health fairs this spring. One county and three state pharmaceutical associations are using the APHA exhibit to promote pharmacy in the following co-operative health events.
