ultrafilter develops intelligent filter system ultrafilter international has developed what it claims to be the first intelligent filter system for compressed air. It consists of a high efficiency compressed air filter capable of removing oil and water aerosols to 0.01 micron with an efficiency better than 99.99999%. Even the best filter is limited by the quality of the drain system. If the drain fails to discharge the oil and water, the whole system fails. If it functions correctly, it commonly wastes valuable air by discharging

unnecessarily. This waste can cost over $400 per year per % 11 drain. The intelligent filter system by ultrafilter offers a combination of high efficiency filtration and electronically level controlled drainage. The standard ultramatronic drain fitted to each filter only operates when liquid is present. Thus, it never wastes air and is positive in operation. The SOlid state sensor is not in contact with the media and cannot be blocked or contaminated. Should a fault develop on the discharge or power interruption occurs, the drain valve

detects the problem and reports an alarm while trying to repair itself in three inteligent ways. Finally, the filter has a double sided differential pressure gauge to measure the efficiency of the filtration. ultrafilter, tnc., Oakbrook Technology Center 5555 Oakbrook Parkway (250) Norcross, GA 30093, USA. Improved fabric filter A fabric filter having an overall efficiency of higher than 99% for gas velocities, as high as 2.7 mis, versus less than 97% for a conventional filter, has been developed at Griffith University (Brisbane, Australia). Designed to purify exhaust gases in large plants, it evolved from a research project to improve the filtration of mists and aerosols on nonwettable filters. Researchers found that efficiency depends on the diameter of drops suspended on the filter, and

on the area of the filter blocked by drops. In the new design, liquid atomizers are located above the filter and spray droplets of water, averaging 50 urn, onto the front surface of the filter, at right angles to the gas flow. Some droplets collide and coalesce with fine particles, increasing their size so that they are more easily captured. Others hit the filter directly and force captured droplets and particles to flow to the bottom, thereby cleaning the surface to make room for more particles.

Osmonics has developed a new spiral-wound membrane element specifically designed for the pharmaceutical industry. The new USPG membrane element features a polished 316L stainless steel permeate tube and a FULLFIT design that expands to fill the housings, eliminating potential dead spaces where bacteria can accumulate.

The sta inless steel permeate tube in the new USPG element ensures that the product water contacts only stainless steel piping components during its production . USPG membrane elements are constructed of FDA acceptable materials and are Class VI tested and approved . When used in a pharmaceutical design twopass RO system , USPG membrane elements consistently produce pure water that meets USP 23 specifications. Technische Textilen lorrach (TTL) has extended its range of products with a new treatment that facilitates the pleating of the filter media. This new treatment can be processed on all filter needlefelts (scrim inserted or scrimless) which are be used for the manufacture of filter cartridges. For extremely low dust emissions and heavily agglomerating dusts all of the company's needlefelts made of synthetic fibres can now be supplied with a PTFE membrane. The very smooth raw gas side and the anti-adhesive character of the membrane facilitate

the cleaning of the filter elements and lead to a lower pressure drop. Also launched is a range of products with TROl filter media. The TROl fibre consists of a modified polyolefin polymer resisting to acids, alkalis and salts. They are able to withstand operating temperatures up to 124°C. The new series of polyester needlefelts designated "ULTRA" is composed of a light scrim and a heavy filtering web of fibres. Technische Textilen Lorrecti. Teichstrasse 56, 079539 Lorrach, Germany.
