Catalyst Design and Preparation for Industrial Applications From the ACS Division of Colloid and Surface Chemistry we received an announcement and call for papers for the Symposium on Catalyst Design and Preparation for Industrial Applications, to be held during the Fall ACS Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, September 7-11, 1997. The design and preparation of catalysts for use in industrial applications will be addressed in this symposium. Industrial applications of interest include: Hydrocarbon Cracking; Reforming; Polymerization/Oligomerization; Oxidation; Isomerization; Carbonylation; Hydrogenation/Dehydrogenation; Hydrodesulfurization; Ammoxidation. This symposium will address issues pertinent in the design of catalytic systems such as the choice of catalytic metals/oxides, the physical and chemical contributions of the support, the dispersion and morphology of the catalyst, the use of promoters, and poisoning resistance. Catalyst preparation issues will also be addressed. Topics to be covered will include synthesis procedures, activation processes, and catalyst manufacturing considerations and concerns. Titles and abstracts, on standard ACS abstract

forms, should be submitted by August 31, 1996. For further information, please contact Scott F. Mitchell at the address given in the Calendar of Forthcoming Events.

Second World Congress on Environmental Catalysis This conference will be held from 15 to 20 November 1998 in Miami Beach, Florida, USA. The meeting follows the very successful meeting in Pisa, Italy in 1995. The intent is to provide an international forum to discuss all aspects of catalysis as it impacts environmental problems. The Congress will be run simultaneously with the American Institute of Chemical Engineers [AIChE] meeting to be held in the same location in Miami Beach and will be operated as a special topical conference jointly with the AIChE meeting. This is being co-organized with the AIChE as a 'Topical Conference on Environmental Catalysis and Reaction Engineering,' sponsored by the Catalysis and Reaction Engineering Division of the AIChE. Registration will allow attendees to attend both meetings and cross sessions at will. All topics related to the use of catalysis for environmental problems will be considered, including a joint session with the AIChE on environmental reaction engineering chaired by Professor Jonathan Phillips. Any questions may be sent to the General Chairman/Second World Congress on Environmental Catalysis, John N. Armor at the address given in the calendar.
