Catalyst Poisoning by L L Hegedus and R. W. McCabe, published by Marcel Dekker Inc , New York, 1984, 128 pp , price, $39 75
For many years the SubJect of catalyst deactivation which includes the poisoning of catalysts has been reported only m papers and reviews. Now a number of books have appeared on this topic, including the present volume, which reflects the increasing recognition of the importance of this subJect This book, wntten by two well-known researchers in the area, covers m Just over 100 pages the specific case of catalyst deactivation by polsonmg The book 1s an extended and up-dated version of a previous review by the same authors, published m Catalysis Reviews - Science and Engmeermg. Basically the book 1s concerned with three aspects, namely, a review of mechanism and kinetics, mtra- and inter-particle transport effects and a case study based on the selection of a suitable automobile exhaust catalyst These form the three mam chapters of the book The review of mechanism and kinetics is reasonably deta&d, referring to both monofunctional and multi-functional catalysts and includes sections on selectlvlty enhancement by the use of appropriate poisons m addition to a well-documented account of the more usual activity loss The mam poison conndered m this chapter 1s sulphur. I would have liked to have seen a more critical dlscusslon of some of the literature quoted but perhaps this was cvcumscrlbed by conslderatlons of space In the chapter on mtra- and inter-pellet transport effects the dlscusslon 1s linked to single pellets and no reference 1s made to catalytic reactor behavlour. Wheeler’s classic analysis 1s extended to time-dependent activity and effects due to pellet size are ducussed Selectlvlty influenced poisoning is also reviewed The final chapter is a case study of automoblle catalyst selection including modlfica-
tlons necessary because of polsomng Only pelletted supported noble metal catalysts are included m the development, monoliths being speclflcally excluded. This chapter 1s rather dlsappomtmg because of this exclusion Although specific to polsomng of catalysts, this book will certainly provide a good source of reference for workers m this field (over 250 references are given) The absence of a section glvmg the notation used may cause some dlfflcultles m reading, but the book 1s otherwise well produced. Its selling price, however, 1s likely to restrict purchasers to libraries rather than the mdlvldual reader R HUGHES
Schaum’s Outline Series Theory and Problems of Engineering Economics by Jo& A Sepulveda, Wllham E Souder and Byron S Gottfrled, published by McGraw-Hill, New York, 1984,184 pp , price $6 95
Sometimes other publishers of academic textbooks must shudder a little at the appearance of another m McGraw-Hill’s celebrated Schaum’s Outline Series, such is the reputation of these large format study guides. In the case of this Engineering Economics volume I know of more than one other book that could learn a good deal from it, but that 1s not necessanly to say that it 1s ideally suited to the British way of teaching There may be some process economics or proJect appraisal courses that develop and use the whole panoply of compound interest formulae, from the single payment compoundamount factor through the uniform series smkmg-fund factor to the gradient series factor and so on (Chapters 2 - 5), but I doubt if they are really necessary for evaluating proJects. Surely all one needs for the most part are net present values and DCF rates of return (Chapter 8), properly used. The Justlhcatlon for such coverage is no doubt that all these factors and formulae are part of the established subJect matter of com0 Elsevler Sequola/F’rmted m The Netherlands
