FOCUS LanzaTech successfully produces jet fuel from waste gases for Virgin Atlantic A total of 1500 US gal of jet fuel has been produced from waste industrial gases of steel mills at a demonstration plant in Shougang, China. The low-carbon ethanol ('Lanzanol') was produced via an alcoholto-jet (AtJ) fermentation process under an R&D partnership among LanzaTech, Virgin Atlantic, HSBC, Pacific Northwest National Lab and the US Department of Energy.

Lean NOx trap diesel oxidation catalyst with hydrocarbon storage function The present invention is directed to a lean NOx trap diesel oxidation catalyst for the treatment of exhaust gas emissions, such as the oxidation of unburned hydrocarbons (HC), and carbon monoxide (CO) and the trapping and reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx). Catalytic composites can comprise a catalytic material on a carrier, the catalytic material comprising a first NOx trap layer that comprises a NOx sorbent and one or more precious metal components located on the carrier and a second NOx trap layer containing hydrocarbon trapping functionality located over the first NOx trap layer that comprises a NOx sorbent, one or more precious metal components, and a zeolite, for example a beta zeolite, wherein the zeolite is substantially free of framework aluminum. Such zeolites are characterized by high crystallinity and/or by being substantially free of framework aluminum to minimize surface acidity.

BOOKSHELF Modern Developments in Catalysis This text comprises a review of current research and practice of catalysis, focusing on five main themes: catalysis design, environmental catalysis, catalysis and energy, chemical transformation, and biocatalysis and biotransformations. Topics range from complex reactions to the intricacies of catalyst preparation for supported nanoparticles. The chapters illustrate the challenges facing catalytic science and the directions in which the
field is developing. Edited by leaders of the UK Catalysis Hub, a consortium of UK universities working together on fundamental and applied research to find out how catalysts work and to improve their effectiveness, this book provides insight into one of the most important areas of modern chemistry. It represents a unique learning opportunity for students and professionals studying and working towards improving the rate and selectivity of catalytic reactions.

Quaternary Ammonium Salts in Organocatalysis The short (100 page) text presents a larger overview of chiral ammonium salts in organocatalysis, and offers historical background about this field of research. The text addresses the different aspects and opportunities ranging from ammonium salt in phase transfer catalysis to modern ion-pair cooperative catalysis. It examines the specific design of ammonium salts as catalysts in modern chemistry. The ammonium salts, especially chiral derivatives, behave as unique catalysts in organocatalysis. They not only form efficiently chiral ion-pairs capable of promoting asymmetric reactions with a larger scope that increases year by year. The text covers the different aspects and opportunities ranging from ammonium salt in phase transfer catalysis to modern ion-pair cooperative catalysis.
