Gerontological Specialties At the University of California, San Francisco, the gerontological Specialty within the scholar program will address either acute or longterm health care needs of the aged. Research and practice will relate to both the biophysical and psychosocial aspects of aging, with resources for studying restorative care and the impact of health policy on care of the elderly. The University of Rochester will offer a specialty in geriatric nursing. The scholar will participate in activities of the university's Center on Aging and a number of community health care agencies providing services to the aged. Research and practice opportunities will be found in the 4'0-bed geriatric unit at Strong Memorial Hospital. The unit, managed by a multidisciplinary staff, focuses on improving functional abilities and investigates risk factors and prevention strategies during acute and long-term hospitalization. Applicants for the program must be registered nurses with earned doctorate degrees and permanent residents of the United States. Deadline for applications for the 1984-85 academic year is Nov. 1. Conference Spotlights Gerontological Research N E W YORK, N Y - - A nursing research conference on gerontology will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 1983, at the Hershey Convention Center i n Hershey, Penn. The conference objectives are to identify areas in need of research study related to the aged, and to begin to establish research collaboration with others in the region. The conference is open to certified nurse clinicians, administrators, researchers, and educators.
Cosponsors of the event are the Mid-Atlantic Regional Nursing Association, Pennsylvania State University, Lancaster General Hospital and Cornwall Manor.
