RECENT ADVANCES IN MALE REPRODUCTION: MOLECULAR BASIS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS. Edited by R. D’AGATA, M. B. LIPSETT,P. POLCXAand H. J. VAN DER MOLEN. Serono Symposia Publications from Raven Press: Vol. 7. Published in 1983 by Raven Press. No. of pages: 350. ISBN: 0-89004-981-l. Retail price as of March 1986: $65.50.
The complexity of studying individual parameters in intact organisms where it is practically impossible to control all experimental variables has led a great number of research scientists to the use of cell culture systems. Cell culture has become an increasingly valuable tool for the neurosciences, and this book highlights some of the latest findings in the fields by international researchers who have made significant contributions in their respective areas. The chapters are pertinently divided into two major sections: (1) Morphological and biochemical studies, and (2) electrophysiological studies. In the first section, different types of cultures are described along with their specific growth requirements and neuronotrophic and hormonal factors involved in their proliferation and differentiation. The use of antigenic markers for identifying different neural cell types in vitro is also reviewed. The second section focuses on the electrophysiological studies using neuronal cells in culture which offer exciting new possibilities for membrane physiologists. Researchers and instructors in the fields of neurophysiology, biology, biochemistry and biophysics will find this book especially valuable.
ENDOCRINE MECHANISMS IN FERTILITY REGULATION. Edited by GIWEPPE BENAGUNOand EG~N DICZFALUSY.In the series Comprehensive Endocrinology, Edited by LUCIANOMARTINI.Published in October 1983 by Raven Press. No. of pages: 366. ISBN: O-89004-464-3. Retail price as of February 1986: $72.50. Fertility regulation remains a large and important field in clinical and basic research in endocrinology because of the requirements of various populations around the world, but it is generally agreed that considerable development of new improved methods is still necessary. An important factor interfering with a rapid development of improved regulating agents is the incomplete understanding of their mechanisms of action in general and of their pharmacokinetic effects on various endocrine mechanisms in particular. This volume has assembled the available information on the most widely used methods of fertility regulation written by leading scientists, experts in their field. The first section reviews the physiology of human female reproduction and ways to interfere with the reproductive processes. Several chapters are devoted to drugs capable of blocking fertility at various levels. The second part reviews male fertility control in a similar fashion and presents both the classical and more recent approaches. The last section deals with hormonal mechanisms and pharmacodynamic effects of steroids given in the excessive doses which are required for the preclinical, toxicological tests. This book will be of great interest to reproductive endocrinologists and gynecologists, practicing clinicians and researchers interested in the field of contraception. This
This book is Volume 7 in a series of Serono Symposia publications from Raven Press and contains up-to-date data on male reproduction. The book includes topics from the molecular basis to clinical applications. It treats the different aspects of androgen production, biosynthesis, interaction with specific proteins, maturation of different male reproductory cells, the factors which control the reproduction of these cells, particularly inhibin. There is useful and recent information on the relationship of male reproductive organs with the hormones of the central nervous system, in particular with luteinizing hormone and gonadotropin releasing hormone. The book also contains interesting aspects concerning the pathological problems with a study of oligozoospermia and unexplained infertility, the treatment of idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in man. The book would be useful to general endocrinologists, those who are interested in the biology of reproduction, gynecologists, and for advanced students. The book has contributions by more than 50 scientists of international reputation and is documented with up-to-date and important references.
MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES IN CANCER. Edited by STEWART SELLand RALPHREWELD.Published June, 1985
by the Humana Press. No. of pages: 448. Retail price: U.S.A., $69.50; elsewhere, $74.50. ISBN: O-89603-068-7. The publication by Kohler and Milstein in Nature (1975) of the methodology of the production of monoclonal antibodies has opened a new era in molecular biology, with enormous applications of the use of monoclonal antibodies in normal and cancerous tissues, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer. This volume contains up-to-date information concerning the very recent development of the characterization of markers in cancer cells using monoclonal antibodies. There are 17 chapters including monoclonal antibodies in animal tumors, monoclonal to carcinoembryonic antigen antibodies, monoclonal antibody against a-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotrophin, malignant T-cells, malignant Bcells, monoclonal antibody in different forms of leukemia, in melanoma, in lung cancer, in breast cancer, in malignant human exocrine pancreatic cells, in human prostatic cancer, renal cancer, as well as the use of monoclonal antibody in neurobiology and neurooncology. The chapters give the most recent information, are well written and include very exhaustive references. This book would be useful in general medicine, cancerology, biochemistry, biology of reproduction, endocrinology, as well as for advanced students.
