The main reason behind this being a desire for greater flexibility and a n e e d to c o n n e c t more devices to the Internet, which is seen as the primary c o n v e y e r of business traffic. In addition, some 77% of respondents i n d i c a t e d that they would a d o p t Asynchronous Transfer M o d e switching technology, an increase of 54% from 1994; and almost two-thirds of respondents said they would use SNMP to control their networks.

Cellular on the verge of going mass market The rapid growth in mobile communications in Europe is evident from a recent survey carried out by BIS Strategic Decisions Mobile C o m m u n i c a t i o n s Service Europe. Consumers in France, Germany, Italy a n d the UK are e x p e c t e d to purchase some 8 million cellular phones for private use during 1995-6. Although currently most users fall into the grey area of using cellular communications for both personal and business use, it is e x p e c t e d that the m o v e into the true consumer mass market of purely personal

use is imminent. Amongst the factors effecting the consumers decision to go mobile are: in building use; availability of national and local service c o v e r a g e ; low tariffs; call reliability; customer service and call security. A second study by BIS of the US market, indicates that the growth in mobile communications is considerably further a d v a n c e d than in Europe. In a series of reports on Personal Communications Services (PCS), BIS estimates that 80% of the US adult population is interested in wireless communication coverage,

with h o m e - b a s e d c o v e r a g e being the primary requirement tar future services. Of those surveyed, one-third indicated an interest in home-only PCS wireless applications, 20% desired a c o m b i n a t i o n of h o m e and mobile c o v e r a g e and 8.5% required mobile-only c o v e r a g e . The majority of potential subscribers considered single billing a must-have c o m p o n e n t , with there being limited t o l e r a n c e for paying a monthly premium.
