When narrov, foundations are subjected to horizontal loading. eff,.-cts may be seen in parts of the surrounding soil which were not considered in analysis of direct ',ertical loading of the :,tructure. Soil rupture bulbs and the corresponding volumetric stress distribution have been anal~,sed for horizontal loading. The resuhs ba'.c been confirmed by model tests on a variety of l'oundation shapes. A further analysis has considered the case of horizon::,lly stratified soil.

Centrifuge tests ~ere conducted to stud,, the beha~iour o( embankments on soft clay foundations prepared ~lth an o~erconsolidated crust oxer normally consolidated kaolin cla.~ Tests ,*ere performed ~ith embankments constructed d u n n g flight in stages. ~ith measurements of pore pressures at selected locations and displacements usim, a mark,:r grid. T ~ o tests are described, one performed with "he clay foundation strengthened using granular columns, the other ~ith ::n untreated foundation. The tests described pro,,ide a simple method for examining elasticit,, and normalit~ m soil.
