Vacuum News Chemical Conventional 'wet" chemical analysis is carried out to any standard method required, supplemented with atomic absorption (flame or carbon rod) and a visible/infrared spectrophotometer. The atomic absorption instrument is able to analyse a variety of metallic elements to parts per million. The sensitivity of the instrument can be enhanced between 100 to 1000 fold by the use of the carbon rod facilities which is available. Fuels analysis is carried out for liquid and solid fuels, including analysis for moisture distillations, carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, viscosity, flash point, gross calorific value, ash, volatile matter, etc. Spectrometry utilizes a Polyvac high performance optical emission direct reading vacuum spectrometer, which has the facility for the analysis of the many elements (Fe, C, Si, Mn, P, S, Cr (low, high), Mo, Ni (low, high), Co, Nb, Ta, Ti, Sn, Cu, V, B and AI) in ions and steels Water analysis is carried out on both boiler and steam generator supplies; pollution investigational services can also be supplied. Atmospheric analysis uses Drager 'Normalair', Gastec and Mines safety appliances which are available for most gases, meauring in percentages or parts per million. Metallurgical Metallurgical services are separated into two sections, mechanical testing and metallographic. Mechanical testing includes tensile testing, an Avery Universal Tensile machine is employed, capable of testing both circular and flat section tensiles with a load capability of up to 100 tons (1000 KN). This unit also incorporates a bend testing facilities for larger sections. It is capable of testing to all codes. By impact testing both charpy and izod specimens could be tested to BS 131 specifications. (i.e. 300 J impact energy for charpies and 170 J impact energy for izods). A variety of hardness testers are available including a Vickers diamond

New vacuum measurement and process control catalogue Edwards High Vacuum has published a new free illustrated Vacuum Measurement and Process Control Catalogue. All gauges, process controllers and pump sequence controllers are sbown calibrated in millibars, the SI unit recently adopted by many vacuum manufacturers. The catalogue contains useful information on the characteristics of different types of gauges. It also gives 136

hardness tester and a Brinell tester; portable units available are a Penetrascope (Vickers Type), Telebrineller (Brinell Type) and a Dynamic Hardness Tester. The metallographic facilities include complete facilities for sample preparation, including electrolytic polishing and etching. A variety of bench optical and projection units are in use together with their photographic accessories. The electron microscope is complete with an X-ray energy dispersive analyser (microprobe) attachment and is available for fractographic and similar studies and qualitative analysis for all except sodium and the light elements. Full photographic services in colour or black and white are available in conjunction with the metallurgical services for the production of technical reports. Part of the service covers flow patterns in boiler models and similar developments where constant modification requires photographic evidence at each stage. Monochrome work includes half tone and line work with some montage. Colour printing includes transparencies, copying, mounting and presentation for exhibitions and publicity work. The specialized products which Foster Wheeler Power Products Limited designs and manufactures for the requirements of the energy industry range from power generation to environmental control and include steam raising equipment for power, process and marine applications, nuclear components, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, cooling towers, and incinerators and pyrolizers for municipal and industrial waste disposal, and also fluidized bed equipment. Within their modern manufacturing structure they have established extensive capabilities in overall project management, research and development, design, engineering, procurer0ent, site construction, repair and maintenance. New Dyna-Quip product review It will be seen that we manufacture a variety of 'reduced bore' Quick Acting Ball Valves in carbon steel, stainless steel and brass with a choice of seat and seal materials to suit the fluid being handled. The range includes High Pressure Models for hydraulic circuits and similar applications and Exhaust Valves. The latter are particularly useful for protecting pneumatic circuits by exhausting locked-in downstream pressure in the 'off' position. Dyna-O.uip Ball Valve features include low pressure drop, rapid simple operation, compact size and optional locking handle. Our Quick Release Hose Couplings speed pneumatic tool or device changeover--they are as important and simple as an electric plug and a vital aid in the workshop and on assembly lines where a wide variety of equipment must be kept in constant use. The Series DC 'Dyna-Con' incorporates an integral shut-off valve which avoids
