skin and muscle. Although more common in groin, abdomen, and extremities, it occurs in head and neck, usually secondary to dental infection. Other infected areas of the head and neck can lead to NF where chronic systemic debilitating illnesses such as diabetes mellitus prevail. Where NF is suspected, a CT scan will aid in assessing the full extent of the infection. Cultures and Gram stains should be performed. Initial intravenous antibiotics should be broad spectrum, including high doses of penicillin and clindamycin or chloramphenicol for penicillinresistant organisms. Early detection, radical debridement and drainage of all infected tissue will reduce mortality.G.H. SPERBER
