CHANCE OF A LIFETIME PERHAPS only once in a generation does the opportunity arise for physiotherapists to attend a WCPT Congress in their own country. Such a Congress offers an extensive scientific piugraiiiiiie, an array of exciting social events, and an occasion to meet people. The choice by the World Confederation for Physical Therapy of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy to host the 1991 Congress at the Barbican can be seen not only ah an honoui-. i t can be accepted by Chartered physiotherapists as an opportunity, togethe1 with colleagues throughout world physiotherapy, to present their work to a wide audience. It is very opportune at this stage in the development of the profession in this country, with the advent of the White Paper ‘Working for Patients’, and Europe 1992, that this should be happening now. Chartered physiotherapists are aware of the importance of establishiiig a aound research base for their profession and of the need to evaluate critically their clinical practice. W C P l 1991 will be an occasion when delegates can listen to papers and view poster presentations of work which is original and unpublished. To have a microcosm of current physiotherapy here in London should be an exhilarating experience, both for those with a vision ofthe future and also for those whose niemories are long. The Scientific Programme Committee has selected four main themes: Health Education, Competence to Practise, Clinical Practice, and Resource Management, together with their sub-divisions. These areas should cover the whole range of professional practice and other professional concerns, and thus encourage physiotherapists to present their work to a wide audience. All the papers and posters accepted for presentation will be published in the Abstract Book and in the Proceedings of Congress. Speakers of international renown have been invited to give keynote lectures or to address the Congress o n important clinical topics. In addition, workshops, discussion groups and seminars are being planned in which delegates will be encouraged to participate. It is usual for clinical visits to be arranged for delegates, but the Scientific Programme Committee, cognisant of the limited time available and the problems of traffic in central London. is asking physiotherapists from clinical centres throughout the country to come to the Barbican to present their work. These presentations will give delegates an opportunity to discuss their joint spheres of interest. May I encourage you to give serious thought to the possibility of registering as a delegate to WCPT 1991 and, in addition, to consider submitting an abstract for a paper or poster presentation. Your work will be of great interest to physiotherapists in the UK and those travelling thousands of miles to meet at the Barbican next year. Remember, this opportunity to welcome world physiotherapy to the United Kingdom will not occur again for another generation.
