Changes in the Associate Editors for Drug and Alcohol Dependence
Drug and Alcohol Dependence set up a system of Associate Editors over ten years ago, due to the increase in submissions that was then being seen with the onset of an electronic system for submitting papers. (It is probably hard for newer scientists to believe, but there was a time when authors mailed – and that is snail mail – multiple paper copies of their work to an editor. The editor then snail mailed those papers to reviewers. Some reading this and recalling those days may feel old, as does this editor.) One of DAD’s early Associate Editors was Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, who has managed papers related to Etiology, Epidemiology, Prevention and Policy. Steff has decided to step down from her position as an AE with DAD. Associate Editors handle a lot of papers for DAD, but few achieve the mark of 1000 assignments, and Steffanie is one of the few. She actually reached that milestone a little over a year ago, and I worried that she might use it as a reason to resign. But, she continued well past 1000, and at last count was at 1148 unique paper assignments. While that’s a remarkable number, what is equally impressive is that she has turned papers around quickly, and has managed the work with efficiency and grace. To have someone combine humor, thoughtfulness, and productivity is rare, and she is one of those rare people who is able to achieve that balance. We will greatly miss her work for DAD. Steffanie is in California, and we stayed on the west coast of the U.S. when finding someone to fill her shoes. to report that Professor Steven Shoptaw has agreed to join our team as an Associate Editor. Steve is a licensed psychologist and the Executive Director of the Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine at UCLA, where he is Professor in the Departments of Family Medicine, and Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, and Vice Chair of Research in Family Medicine. He is Co-Director for the UCLA Center for HIV Identification Prevention and Treatment Services (CHIPTS) where he is working with a team of colleagues to push the science on the next generation of technological advances and biomedical approaches to prevent HIV transmission, especially in people who use drugs. He has conducted randomized controlled trials of medications and behavioral interventions for addictions and has written over 180 papers. He also works internationally, primarily in studying treatments for addiction and HIV prevention. Steve will fill the critical role that Steff had, by providing expertise at the interface of addictions and infectious diseases such as HIV. I am delighted that he is joining the DAD team as an AE. As I have done in the past, I also want to take this opportunity to publicly and very sincerely thank the other AEs who work on behalf of the journal: Jan Copeland, Eske Derks, Kyle Kampman, Kerry Keyes, Adam Leventhal, Lin Lu, Linda Porrino, and Craig Rush. This is a great group working on behalf of the journal − I am reminded on a daily basis of their thoughtfulness and hard work, as they manage what seems like an always-increasing number of papers submitted to DAD. continues to provide the definition of “help” through the countless day-to-day issues that arise with authors, reviewer, AEs (and the occasional Editor in Chief problem). I am also thankful for the help of Lisa Colson, our publisher representative, and the assistance of the Elsevier support team. Editing a journal is very rewarding, but also is challenging, and the quality of the people associated with DAD make the balance lean heavily toward the rewarding side of the scale. In closing, I hope you will join me in thanking Steffanie Strathdee for all that she has done to help make DAD a success. The journal is very fortunate to have had the generosity of her time and talent over these years. And, I hope you will also join me in welcoming
Steve Shoptaw to the AE team, as he assumes a role that Steff has so kindly filled for so many years. In the meantime, send us your good scientific reports, and agree to help do reviews! Editor in Chief, Drug and Alcohol Dependence Eric C. Strain (M.D.) Baltimore, MD, United States E-mail address:
