Austria, Germany & Malaysia: Schaefer – PCC Schaefer Kalk GmbH is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) business. The company currently produces about 120,000 tonnes/y of PCC from three locations in Germany and Austria. It sells its product under the brandname Precarb, mainly to papermakers, especially to mills making cigarette papers. The major plant is at Hahnstätten, where Schaefer makes about 60,000 tonnes/y of dry PCC and 20,000 tonnes/y of PCC slurry. The company also runs two satellite PCC plants – at the Neidenfels cigarette paper mill of Julius Glatz (in Germany) and at the Papierfabrik Wattens cigarette paper mill (in Austria). China: Cheng Shin Toyo – rubber masterbatch Cheng Shin Toyo Tire & Rubber Co is purchasing two rubber masterbatch mixer feedlines from Chronos Richardson for delivery in February 2005. They will be installed at its factory in Kunshan City, Jiangsu province. Each of the new lines will have a small chemical checkweighing and indexing system; dedicated zinc oxide weighing systems; oils and polymers weighing and feeding; and weighing and feeding systems for carbon black and for white fillers. Czech Rep: Precheza – TiO2 Precheza opened its new technology centre at Prerov in October 2004. This centre, built at a cost of CEK 15 M, will be devoted to research and development in Precheza’s two main fields of activity – TiO2 and iron oxide pigments. Some research projects on nanomaterials technology are envisaged. Precheza is the sole producer in the Czech Republic, with capacities for producing 42,000 tonnes/y of TiO2 and 12,000 tonnes/y of iron oxide pigments. India: Gujarat Mineral Development Corp – kaolin The Gujarat Mineral Development Corp has revealed that a deposit containing about 180 M tonnes of kaolin has been identified in the geographical belt spanning from Bhuj to Fatehgadh in the Rapar Taluka district of eastern Kutch. Another belt stretching from Bhuj to Anjar is likely to have deposits that may yield some 30-40 M tonnes of kaolin. Asian Ceramics, Oct 2004, 14

India: KCP Biotech – natural food colorants KCP Biotech Ltd (part of the KCP group, headquartered in Chennai) intends to set up a natural food colorants plant at the Shapoorji Pallonji Biotech Park in Shamirpet, near Hyderabad. The plant will produce natural colours from turmeric, chilli powder and annatto seeds, employing technology developed by the Central Food Technological Research Institute (of Mysore) and the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (of Hyderabad). KCP is seeking product quality approvals from the US Food & Drug Administration and from its EU counterpart. Initial production will be

Japan: Asahi Glass/Dohkai – silica Dohkai Chemical Industries (a subsidiary of Asahi Glass) plans to double the capacity of its silica plants in Fukuoka province. The company is already operating at near full-capacity levels, producing Sunsphere (highperformance micro-spherical silica) and MS Gel (silica fillers for chromatography columns). UK: Impact Colours – plastics masterbatch Impact Colours (a subsidiary of Curtis Plastics of Luton) has spent £100,000 on new mixing equipment for its plant at Rushden, Northants. Impact Colours plans to release a range of masterbatches that will cover a range of 220 stock colours by the end of 2004, demonstrating its faith in the market potential of universal colour masterbatch.
